I'm not that familiar with Sitchin's work, but for the sake of argument...
1. Perhaps a monoatomic form of gold would stay aloft in the atmosphere.
2. Who's to say their planet always had that orbit? Perhaps some passing space body dragged it out to it's current orbit.
3. These space people were supposedly very long lived, and the years it took to perfect humans could have seemed like a matter of days to them.
