BALTIMORE THE great 1908 explosion in Siberia, a strange lunar flare- up seen by monks in 1178, and the severe jostling of seismographs left by astronauts on the moon in 1975 may all have been manifestations of the same phenomenon: a swarm of about 100 cometary fragments that constitute ''a new feature of the solar system,'' an astrophysicist suggested here today.

I notice that the OP article is more than 26 years old - Published: June 12, 1984.

I wonder if further research since then has supported or disproved Brecher's hypothesis?
