I'm going to just go out on a limb here. If they wanted him they could have gotten him easy. It's not as easy as just buying a ticket to a neutral country and even then coming out of hiding won't really change anything. Most people think that our intelligence community / government / military are full of incompetents and imbeciles, yes there are quite a few unfortunately, but they are capable of some pretty elaborate things. Call it an absurd theory and breaking away from the pack but I'll be watching this closely.

Why does UrbanShaman's last thread come to my mind when reading this (OP)??
US's Last thread.

Any who... I do not see the benefit of someone like Julian Assange giving away his identity freely. So there must really be something serious going on for that to happen....

I agree with your post . I too , feel he may not be top-dog in the Wikileaks hierarchy .

I don't really know which way to go on all this but , I do think he is most likely just the 'point-man' in this organization . There are probably those of immense power and wealth who actually call the shots in Wikileaks and therefore are holding the U.S. gov/military 'over the barrel' , as it were .

Maybe some sort of extortion/blackmail type of thing going on , forcing the U.S. gov into negotiations/debates concerning foreign policy or some other venue .

Although we are not being told , I wouldn't be surprised if there are demands being made , behind the scenes , from foreign heads of state and those who pull their strings as well .

I still can't shake the gut-feeling that 9/11 was a situation that found the U.S. gov being 'held hostage' on that day . Kind of like those scenarios where the family of the bank president is held hostage while he is forced to assist in the robbery .

I've got a hunch that this may be exactly what is going on in this case as well .

I think that this entire situation has withered on the vine. If Assange had any information or government leaks that was powerful enough to have the government after him, he should have leaked it by now.

False alarm? Maybe this was just hype to see how the Prolls would act. I don't know, but I want my jaw-dropping information leak NOW! I hope Assange doesn't ruin his cred here.

Hi obilesk ,

A cable is basically an electronic communication , much like an e-mail or telegram , the difference being that cables are transmitted on highly secured networks with built-in encryption security .

These networks are used by governments , military , intelligence agencies , etc ., to transmit specific information that would require extra precautions that ensure the handling and dissemination of said communications are directed to , and remain within , very specific channels .

About 90% of this type of communications are transmitted thru two systems , as concerns the U.S.

Those two systems are : Defense Special Security Communications System (DSSCS) , which transmits Sensitive Compartmentalized Information (SCI) ,

and , General Services (GENSER) , which does not carry compartmentalized information .

Hope this answers your question .

He's so full of crap and self promotion.... Bradley Manning didn't disappear, he was arressted. And he should have been. Leaking classified documents. He's going to be convicted of treason, and rightfully so. I have no idea what all he leaked but I'm willing to bet some of it put American lives in danger.

Assange wants transparency, perhaps he should ahve some in his own company. I haven't seen him release one item without coloring it with his slant. If he truly wanted transparency he wouldn't engage in yellow journalism.

Confidential diplomatic cables could disclose deals between US and Al Qaeda, many foreign warlords and drug lords, deals with many war criminals, dictators and whatnot. I'm pretty sure many countries are involved in all kinds of illegal operations logged in those cables. It could contain info about deals between US and Radovan Karadjic who is currently held in Hague claiming he has some of those cables himself. It could put USS Liberty mystery to light. Finally, it could also contain info about 9/11.

No one would want that brought to light, not even some ATS members apparently. We all have secrets it seems. Some things are better left buried right?

The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know.

John F. Kennedy

You probably feel I'm anti-American or something, but I don't wish death upon Julian like many do. I wish he sends those cables to all federal government agencies in US, to white house, secretary of state, congress members and senators. Then, if nothing happens, well, we truly live in a hopeless "democratic" society I guess. Even if he does send it to the press, I doubt they'd be allowed to publish any of it.

ROFLMAO !

You can't be serious ? These are the very people who are crapping their pants , having anxiety attacks , stroking out , and developing Irritable Bowel Syndrome over the possibility of these communications being leaked !

Do you SERIOUSLY think they would 'do anything' ?

And if you were capable of denying ignorance instead of embracing it, you would know that everything he has had sent to him has been released without tampering.

Yes, Collateral Damage, the ONLY THING RELEASED BY WIKILEAKS WITH A SLANT ON IT, was tampered with. And Julian has openly admitted this. But you seem to be forgetting that the original footage was also released, in full.

As I said in another thread, this a pretty difficult situation to wrap the mind around. On one hand...if people wanted him dead, he'd be dead. On the other hand, it is entirely likely that Julian set up a network of individuals in the know to release this information in the case that he goes missing. On the third hand that was created due to radiation, if the other hand is correct then he would have no reason to want to stay hidden and in fact would willingly be out in the open. On the fourth hand from a different dimension, in a way he has done this considering he is meeting with the European Parliament...

Difficult situation to decode. Very difficult. Only time will reveal all answers.

One things for sure...I like this Julian character whether or not he is a facade.

Assange appeared in public in Brussels for the first time in almost a month to speak at a seminar on freedom of information at the European parliament.

So looks like he's ok. What I don't understand is how he is still alive. The guy is speaking to the European government and is wanted by the U.S. for leaking important info that they wanted contained. Unless he is some sort of agent... which I don't think any can rule out, I don't see how he's walking freely or even alive.

In order to create and control conflict, you must be capable of controlling both sides.

If he is alive, there is a reason.

The problem is that when you assume the reason is nefarious on his part, you neglect to think of the countless reasons why he is alive and NOT a front by the government.

Hello,

From Wikipedia, I know??? According to this; en.wikipedia.org...

Biography
[edit] Early life

Assange was born in Townsville, Queensland in 1971.[1] Assange has said that his parents ran a touring theatre company, and that he was enrolled in 37 schools and 6 universities in Australia over the course of his early life.[2]

During his childhood years, he lived on the run with mother and half-brother. They were avoiding his half-brother's father who was believed to belong to a cult led by Anne Hamilton-Byrne.[1]

Assange helped to write the 1997 book Underground: Tales of Hacking, Madness and Obsession on the Electronic Frontier which credits him as researcher.[3] It draws from his teenage experiences as a member of a hacker group named "International Subversives", which involved a 1991 raid of his Melbourne home by the Australian Federal Police.[4][5] Wired, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The Sunday Times have pointed out that there exist similarities between Assange and the person called "Mendax" in the book.[6][7][8] The New Yorker has identified Assange as Mendax and explains its origin from a phrase of Horace. Assange allegedly accessed various computers (belonging to an Australian university, a telecommunications company, and other organizations) via modem[9] to test their security flaws; he later pleaded guilty to 24 charges of hacking and was released on bond for good conduct after being fined AU$2100.[4][5][7]

According to the Personal Democracy Forum, Assange founded a civil rights group for children called "Pickup".[10]

Was this a rather light sentence, could he have bargained, been put to "good" use?

There's been questions in the thread concerning his authenticity as an advocate/outlet for whistleblowers; and in this OP's thread, well, I tried to seek any back-ground on Assange.

Could Assange be used as a front toward a more sinister plot? Keep our tastebuds active but feeding our senses like a mushroom?

I don't like sceptical paranoia...2 + 2 isn't 4 somehow I'm afraid.

Somebody set me straight?

From how I've looked at this since the first video, there isn't much I can do to set you straight.

There is both a possibility he is a front for something else or that he is genuine in his message.

Only time will tell which possibility is the truth.

The most convincing lie is a lie that the teller believes is true - maybe he believes in his cause, but is being allowed to play on under secret supervision.

He probably cut a bargain, like "As long as nothing happens to me, so and so will never come to light...but if i dissapear, the deluge occurs...."

That would be horrible! He would be using Manning as a pawn if he did that! The purpose of the theft was for the info to get out to the people and show them what is really going on. If Assange just used it as leverage to cover his own ass, then I'd say screw him!

This could simply be paranoia but what if Wikileaks was a government front and people end up leaking things right to the government? I don't see how this guy could be alive otherwise.

I know THIS could simply be paranoia, but what if you are a government front placed here to create doubt about Wikileaks in order to prevent people from leaking documents to a legitimate organization dedicated to freedom of information?

See how that works? It can be applied to anyone, anywhere it suits you.

I personally doubt that Wikileaks is a government front, because their actions seem to belie that idea. I would sooner believe that you were a disinfo agent if I had to choose between the two. (Though thankfully, I dont, and the third option, neither of you are government fronts is also available to me.)

I'm actually being serious, I don't believe all of the government is corrupt to the bone. Chances are most of them are on a "lay low and keep your mouths shut" payroll, but would stand up if someone would make them aware of what really goes on, even in military. I mean you have this alleged intelligence officer who couldn't take it any more... I think many more would support him if they saw what he saw. Most of them just take their monthly "no questions asked" check and enjoy the golfing, but if you stick these cables in there faces....

That's much better option than disclosing chunks of those documents in papers like "Russian Pravda" which is exactly what would-be-exposed criminals want.

But of course, maybe I'm being way too optimistic and have no idea what (who) I'm talking about.
