I started this thread in the video section initially, and wanted to bump it here

So, BP leases the rights to the oil from the US Government, correct?

Do they lose that lease when they # up like this? Or is that oil still technically 'theirs'?

Is all that oil out there fair game for some industrious person to gather and sell back to an oil refinery?

I'm curious abut the legal implications and where the line is drawn as far as 'ownership' of the crude.

Good question

I would think that once this oil enters international waters ownership could be subject to international maritime salvage law.
