If I didn't know what this picture was of, I would think it was an amazingly beautiful photo. However knowing full well what it is and what it means makes me nauseated...

It's baffling to me as well, I don't live near the situation, but you can't be tellin' people to relax, it is devastating.

whoa whoa whoa. I think you might have been replying to the wrong person. Trust me, I know this is a huge deal. But hey, I know it is possible to make mistakes when attempting to quote or reply to someone, so no worries.

Yeah definitely no more than a foot or so at most, so not surfable anyway. I would be livid if this happened anywhere near my home town (or any decent beach for that matter) so I can only imagine how distressing it would be for those who actually live near and use this beach.

I thought it was eerily beautiful as well, the way the oil spots can be seen through the water. But then when you actually think about what you're seeing, its disgusting.

Not to be a jerk, but how is an image of a tiny, still-translucent wave with blue water in the background "the most horrifying" image you've seen on here when things like these have been up for weeks?

It all comes down to how each person reacts, I suppose its the fact that it shows no normal water, but rather just the polluted form performing an action which we normally see with pristine blue waters, the wave that is. I'm not saying that the above images aren't horrible, they are, and maybe putting them on scales is wrong as well, but this is just my personal opinion, nothing more.

Now I wonder how america would react if pictures emerged of a beach covered in oil-soaked kittens...

I don't know...

It would probably be worse because kitties are cuter...

Swimming kitties, that would be a sight.

I think that I read that pic was taken 90 miles from the spill in Alabama. I could be mistaken though.

Yep... It's right off the coast of alabama... But 90 miles from the leak...

I wish they would stop using the word spill... Its not a spill

Good eye... didn't even pick up on the fact that its still constantly being referred to as a 'spill'.

BP 'major leak' would be a more appropriate term.

That pic is truly disturbing.

Those who say the oil gusher is "not a big deal", need to get their heads out of the oil soaked sand.

For Christ's sake, you people ... it's just a bloody oil spill

May I recommend moving closer to this beach?

It looks like Shoggoth!

I hope everyone realizes that the government does pay people to make certain subjects look "foolish" and "not a big deal", im not accusing any certain member of doing that here, but it does happen. So watch out for those people and dont let them sway your opinion. This is oil spill is horrible and if anyone tries to make it sound any different they have some issues.

Water is a medium in which living things flourish, that pic shows how our hunger for energy is soiling that medium. What will it take to get Humans to curb our appitites? maybe a Nice hurricane that picks up that crap and then spreads it across every state west of the Mississippi?

We can be doing so much better as a people.

That is one cool looking wave, hopefully there is still more oil out there for us to enjoy all this. Its so surreal. Imagine being there in person and watching it.
