At bottomhole conditions the "methane" natural gas is in solution and not crystalline. It's just like the CO2 in your Miller Lite, it does not come out of solution until the pressure is reduced to the "bubble point" pressure. Even if the reservoir is at the bubble point if the gas breaks out of solution 1 standard cubic foot of gas at the surface with be compressed to a volume of .00155 cubic feet down hole @ 10,000 psi pressure.

Hoagland, like Matt simmons,Mikao Kaku, Bill Nye and others continually demonstrate their ignorance about the subject matter. Of particular interest was the mindless comment about 100,000 psi bottomhole pressure. If that was the case and they drilled into a permeable formation it would have launched the entire rig into space immediately upon drilling into it. The earth itself only weighs about 164 #/cubic foot if it was solid silica, so at 18,000' with 100,000 psi of pressure the force lifting the earth would be 14,400,000 pounds per square foot with the weight of the earth only being 2,952,000 pounds per square foot. If Hoagland was right we would be looking at oil volcanoes in the gulf without any drilling. BP reported 14#/gallon rat hole mud in the hole before cementing. Therefore this was the mud weight that balanced the reservoir pressure so that they could run casing before the blowout. This mud has a hydrostatic gradient of .728 psi/foot of depth. The reservoir pressure is therefore at most 13,099 psi.

If the casing has split and it's pressuring up outside the wellbore it certainly isn't good, but it's still nothing that the relief wells can't handle with the bottom kill. It is simply a matter of balancing the heigth of hydrostatic head with the weight of mud to match the bottomhole pressure. This is your high school algebra teachers moment. If 18,000 heigth of 14#/gallon mud equals 13,099 psi and the casing is split at 1000' from the surface what weight of mud must be pumped to equal 13,099 psi.

I think they got that figure from Firedoglake .. I read it there also ... and they said the well was 4 miles into the ground, yet I just heard another video saying it was even deeper than 4 miles ... so that is 5 miles down for certain, maybe more? .. is that still 13,099 PSI?

When the well blew it shot 8 miles of pipe into the air (a quote) ...

But this is not exactly what I am looking to find out ... as this is history and we need to focus on the future for everyone's sake.

There is talk about the well bore disintegrating .. sonic speeds and cavitation erosion, 200,000 gallons per day, others say more and it is coming out with (likely)breccia and other particles in it.

In a middle of the road calculation of the erosion (pick a day you think the current cap will fall over or have to be suspended from a ship to keep from crushing down into the formation ...

At the current rate of bore hole decomposition .. what size do you believe the bore hole will be when they are ready to make a kill shot? (knowing the pipe and the concrete are gone now!)

Six feet, 15 feet 30 feet ... worse?
There must be a science to erosion ... and this is pretty bad .. so what is your estimate? ... if you'd care to give one of course .. I don't want to pin you to the wall ..... but there must be someone who could guesstimate it?

Read my post again.

How do you use a GPS device and a Depth Finder to map a gas bubble on the ocean floor?

That is the basis of the whole thing. I don't think an average High School Student would take more than a minute to cut through that.

Could be he is that illiterate, but do you really think so?

Here you go:

US Gulf Deepwater Bathymetric study:

and:

Gulf of Mexico Framework Bathymetry Data Service Award number IA560110408b, Category 2: Establishing Framework Data Service NOAA and ESRI will establish an OGC compliant Web Feature Service of framework bathymetry data for the Gulf of Mexico.

Bathymetry provides the spatial infrastructure for a broad range of gulf-wide users including those in recreational boating, fishing, ecosystem modeling, flood inundation, marine transportation, oil and gas exploration and management, dredge material management, and coastal hazards.

User demand and expectation for available bathymetry has increased as the terrestrial geospatial community has progressed and users see the value of seamless map products for the land-sea interface.

Federal Geographic Data Committee

USGS Data Service Cataloge .. Gulf of Mexico Bathymetry

Texal Louisiana continental shelf page .. bathymetry

He is calling for new equipment to be dropped in the Gulf waters to monitor and warn in real time. There is a white paper in the works, will come out on Facebook as well as other places I guess.

He gets excited .. I think it is because he cares ... but so do lots of folks (and after two whole nights and one day of typing .. I am going to get dictation software!!)

Aye. Leads me to believe he is either delusional, or one of the most talented disinformation stooges operational in his, uhm, "areas".
Even some of the brightest and most talented people burn out and lose it. There's no doubt the man is intelligent, and a remarkable speaker as well.

Phil Hendrie, a radio comedy show host had a guest/character on his show named General Johnson Jameson. General Jameson would usually call Art Bell complaining the martians were blocking out the Sun, invading his house to steal his Earth handle, CIA agents, you name it. General Jamesonlives in a bunker deep under the Saskatchewan crust some 500 feet. General Jameson was Hendrie's version of Richard C. Hoagland. It was damn funny too.

I know... or aye, as you say, we can get lost along the way.
I certainly wouldn't mean to demean his intent, we all follow our
roads to see where it ends, Mr. Hoagland may be merely struggling
to get his message out.

I too have had the sun-blocking problem... I have no idea why the
Martians do it, and what's worse, why they disguise their blocking
by making it look like next-door's 8-foot tall fence.

I thought it was obligatory to live 500 feet below Saskatchewan?

It could be that he looks on this topic in an easier
'manageable' way and misses out certain areas that
go against his view.

It could also be your second point... I don't know.

Hi everybody... especially the supposed debunkers of the post.

I see your point, and we do not have all the facts, and many of us here are not geologists nor scientist nor understand all of the intricacies of deep water drilling through strata.

That being said, what Mr. Hoagland said does explain a lot of circumstances and actions and even inactions circulating around the disaster. Why, it's almost as if there was a conspiracy.

What? A conspiracy...discussed here on a conspiracy website? I magine that. As for the opinions and facts and entertainment offered here, hopefully we are smart enough to see it for that.

But, I side with you dear debunkers. Let's get to some of the more factual topics...like GW Bush is a missing kid eating shapeshifting reptillian. Or that Denver Intl Airport has 27 levels and houses aliens, hybrids, ufos, and Jimmy Hoffa, or that Beyonce and B Spears really are tied to the NWO and Illuminati.... yup, just the facts, mam.

Yes... these are facts, except the idea of Beyonce and B Spears
being tied up, is enough for me!
I've been to Denver airport several times and I picked nothing up...
(no, leave it alone!)... that indicates anything sinister going on.

'Big Jim?'... I can't comment on, since I saw him leaving on a plane
out of Memphis with Mr. Burrows. Thankya vury much!

Is it that GW is missing or is 'missing-kid' his choice of meal?!!

There is no scenario this silly, this is a well they are trying to RECOVER,to keep as a viable asset.

They could stop it but it would mean they COULDNT CAP OR CONTROL IT.

The only force capable of shutting the well in is the same one forcing it or allowing it to come out.

Fracture the formation and shut the hole in.Micro-fractures.

The pressure from downhole has to be split into manageable sections and slowly shut in.

There is no shutting the well in at this point in a conventional sense, but it can still be manipulated, not completely controlled, but manipulated.

Just because we cant use the well bores supportive cemented casing as an anchoring point doesnt mean we cant create a surface anchor point to gain some control of the flow to split it into managable sections or flares that can be shut in in sequence.

Large barge or ship, pumped full of concrete, sank over well head as anchor point for a set of flarelines that seperate the pressureised fluids into manageable sections ANCHORED TO THE SUNKEN SHIP FULL OF CONCRETE.Literally CAP the well with a funnel that has four spouts. Then plug each managable spout one at a time.

EPA finds high concentrations of gases in the area

The escape of other poison gases associated with an underground methane bubble (such as hydrogen sulfide, benzene, and methylene chloride) have been found.

Last Thursday, the EPA measured hydrogen sulfide at 1,000 parts per billion — well above the normal 5 to 10 ppb. Some benzene levels were measured near the Gulf of Mexico in the range of 3,000 – 4,000 ppb — up from the normal 0-4 ppb.

source

these high concentrations of poisons directly associated with a gas bubble are something to look into more....it may back up the gas bubble claim made by Hoagland along with yesterday's info about the oil in the leak containing 40% methane instead of the normal 5%

It never ceases to amaze me that when a complex subject is at hand, wannabe experts crawl out from under every adjacent rock and start screaming. In medicine, we see this with all sorts of semi-schooled people who for one reason or another want to be or appear to be doctors and AREN'T: angry nurse practitioners, grandiose nurses who have become confused about what they don't know, PAs, non medical PhDs of all stripes, naturapaths, chirosociopaths and other myriad sub-criminal sociopaths, narcissists and opportunists. During the swine flu scare, all of these types crawled out and either tried to sell their uneducated opinions or actually sell some type of snake oil. It resulted in mass confusion.

Here we see the same damn thing; all sorts of people with no credentials in petroleum chemistry, geology, rig engineering, etc., running their uninformed mouths, in order to gain their moment of fame.

Too bad we no longer have actual news and independent reports whose reports could be trusted. We are surely in the age of confusion. Information age----BS.

The arrogance of an MD never ceases to amaze me. Credentials do not an expert make nor does your blanket dismissal of opinion outside the narrow focus your opinions mean much. Because you do not have knowledge beyond what you had to learn to become a MD does not mean that some people here have not been continuing their education for a very long time.
Your dismissal of the "lay opinion" shows you have not been following the flow of information and it's release.
Consistently there have been posts ahead of the news.
I posted weeks ago from my experience in oil production and chemistry that the blow out that fragged the rig also fracked the well casing, I brought up the melting salt domes which leave large caverns to collapse due to increased infiltration of the seafloor and that a nuke would frack the containment dome. But what do I know I only have three degrees on my wall and none in petrogeology.
This is NOT rocket science it is simple physics first yr stuff the fact that you as an MD do not seem to be able to weed out the pseudo-science without a blanket analogy is as weak as those who post pure ignorance( and shows why I made a good living tutoring Pre-meds at UCLA in basic education).
Just remember it was those "experts" with their degrees who are behind this because they had the same attitude you show. Disdain for other opinion and the "I am an expert" ego.
I can only imagine the house of cards which would fall if the "experts" were truly held accountable for their expertise.
At any rate I am off topic somewhat and will stop my rant with this last statement.
Myopic expertise is an oxymoron and a myopic expert a moron.
N.

PS I am no "expert" but the simple logistics of the well say it was a crapshoot. Having a mile of water on top of a mixture of sedimentary silt and salt domes and then boring into the deep earth, What kind of EXPERT dreamed this one up?. Likely one who would dismiss my opinion outright as a "layman" when I would have said "ARE YOU NUTS!

The fact that we don't have actual news says something very striking . ... does it not?

The fact that we depend on the web (and I read a great deal of my news on out of US sites) says even more!!

I think it is healthy and good that people take an interest .. that their egos are along for the ride, well that is just people ... love em or leave em or just get by as you can ... like they do.

Have you seen those random number generators? ... they can tell when lots of people are mentally focused on something or another .. the randomness disappears from the numbers ... so the more minds focused upon some event the better!! ...

It is quantum Physics and the Uncertainty principle, and it is also --- according to David Bohm (great reading) why machines will never be able to be what humans are!! .. We have the connection to this transcendental quantum level and machines do not ... HOWEVER ...we make nice pets and slaves from time to time .. maybe?

Besides .. giving yourself a crash course in some new subject on the web is not such a bad pastime .. I know, I have had to do some remedial work on areas I know little about ... like Bathymetrics .. I have bought books much more often than I would have ... and My Library has become my home away from home. ... so I think the web is cool, and people's egos just come with the human terrain.

Whew .... too much space moving past by on this page ... my ego will be cowering.

This is my new idea in an attempt to end the media black out!

Possiblity of underwater landslide and tsunami in the Gulf

If the President needs some help in getting around the brass knuckles presented as fear for harm of the general public (which is totally bogus, or their temp workers would have better personal protection and medical services) ..... then maybe the general public needs to present him with a case as to why he needs to be a bit more forthcoming in getting some serious cooperation from BP ... if that is not a non sequitur.

OK .. we think we are the big stand up country for the world, right?

There is not a chance for one tsunami ... but for THREE tsunami to happen:

I have not squinted at good bathymetric data yet .. I have to do this, but the general lay of the land which I have seen indicates this is on a slope of the shelf, sloping south and the ridge is east / west. Richard Hoagland says it is in a canyon ... ? .. I don't know .. exactly (looks like a very odd place, however):

Awesome interactive map, check the boxes on the sides, lots of information and updates are fairly current -- Back all the way out and you see the line between Cancun and Havana going down to South America .. looks bad for Panama! (where is Gitmo?)
Interactive map Gulf of Mexico

One: .. the Bubble can just pop and go sky high or at least displace a LOT of water. ==wave and dunking of the shores with bad gunk, atmosphere gets a big hit as well. Gulf gets oxygen.

Two: .. The Bubble can break and cause an underwater landslide (see the one just to the right), and the landslide (remember the one in the enclosed area in Alaska .. hillside slope to water equaled huge wave) .. same difference ... Hillside or canyon side landslide displaces lots of water and who gets the first and worst wave? Cancun and Havana and then South America and likely Panama as well!!
Ditto; but this time the wave has a strong directional vector on it.

Three: .. The Bubble bursts, there is also a landslide, and the landslide releases tons and tons of methane which also rises and causes another wave or adds to the first. Ditto, only worse!

The other scenario I have heard on Videos on You Tube is a collapse of the oil dome itself -- at least 4 miles down: .. they believe it is over a volcanic chamber and the water and the vulcanism would cause, ready? ... A steam eruption and steam driven tsunami .. this is bad as well.

Oh Mexico, Yucatan, Cuba; Oh South America, Panama ... we need to have a little chat ...I have no hard data ... but we need to inform you that ...

AT THIS POINT ... there can be no more stonewalling by BP! ..
At this point there can be no more molly coddling of BP ... by Obama.

This is worse than serious ... if the possibility is even plausible .... Hoagland is correct they need the Mud Log Data!!

And if we still want to be the stand up good guys for the World .. we need to begin sooner than relief wells!! .. We need to be "responsible" to our American continental neighbors.

Plus, we need to get together with our World buddies, and we need to make certain such things are covered in the future. Especially in international waters.

I am not saying it has not already been done, but ... no one told us, and it is supposed to be our country, too ...not just Washington's. They "work" for us, right? ... ... ...

Why is it that when bad news arrives, our first instinct is to shoot the messenger?
You know..I don;t know what bothers me most..the nay-sayers who just don;t wanna believe the facts in front of them, or the gleeful " I really enjoyed this over my morning coffee" enthusiasts who seem to get a kick out of anticipating certain doomsday scenarios..or look at this as some gripping entertainment to be joked about on SNL and John Stewart.

I have relatives and friends in the affected areas..I have contacts... active and retired...who have in one way or another been drawn into this and are extremely alarmed at what they are hearing, being asked to analyse or are witnessing first hand what is going on in the GOM.

I suspect Hoagland is jumping on the bandwagon after having heard much the same form his circle of contacts..or maybe from just trolling the Net like many here and attempting to put two and two together.
One thing I would ask you all to think about is why..if publicity is his aim..a publicity that depends on at least some shred of credibility..would the good professor be risking any of what little he has by throwing in with the OMG-Chicken Little brigade screaming this is a possible extinction event..a Biblical prophecy about to come true within weeks..if there was no real likelihood that the worst really IS about to happen?
Before you answer that..maybe you should read this...an article I suspect Richard was intimately familiar with before he went on Coast-To-Coast
www.helium.com...
Then make up you own minds about what the science is, what the facts are, and what the future holds.

I post below only a very few of the quotes from an extremely informed article that is well worth the read..[link above]..especially for anyone who wants to come to grips with the reality of the situation...
If there be any among you who wish to argue the science...well..let's hear it. Otherwise..I suggest we best prepare for a fundamental change of life as we know it in these good ol United States...
======================================

"First of all...set aside all your thoughts of plugging the well and stopping it from blowing out oil using any method from the top down. Plugs, big valves to just shut it off, pinching the pipe closed, installing a new bop or lmrp, shooting any epoxy in it, top kills with mud etc etc etc....forget that, it won't be happening..it's done and over. ..."
The well bore structure is compromised "Down hole".

"That is something which is a "Worst nightmare" conclusion to reach. While many have been saying this for some time as with any complex disaster of this proportion many have "said" a lot of things with no real sound reasons or evidence for jumping to such conclusions, well this time it appears that they may have jumped into the right place...
"....What is likely to happen now? Well...none of what is likely to happen is good, in fact...it's about as bad as it gets. "
...There isn't any "cap dome" or any other suck fixer device on earth that exists or could be built that will stop it from gushing out and doing more and more damage to the gulf. While at the same time also doing more damage to the well, making the chance of halting it with a kill from the bottom up less and less likely to work, which as it stands now?....is the only real chance we have left to stop it all.

It's a race now...a race to drill the relief wells and take our last chance at killing this monster before the whole weakened, wore out, blown out, leaking and failing system gives up it's last gasp in a horrific crescendo. ..."

==============================================

So..anyway..forget what Dr. Hoagland says..just read what people in the science community and the big-oil industry are posting on their own websites.

It's really simple, attack the source rather than the information, that way you don't have to bother with learning or researching anything, and you can throw those convienent stop words around so nobody else will look into it either. Intelligence Agencies call them 'stop words', when you use a word like Alien, UFO, Paranormal, conspiracy etc., the brain of the average intellectually spoon fed 'consumer' has been programmed to reject the information out of hand. In this case, the 'stop word' is Hoagland, and if you will notice alot of the would-be debunkers aren't even dicussing what the man actually said, simply attack the word Hoagland, and they feel like they've accomplished something or impressed folks. Fortunately, it isn't an extremely effective tactic here because ATS is a congregation of open minded people, alot of whom can see and read for themselves.
