So let me start by saying I make NO OPINIONS about what the helicopter's intentions were, I can only put what I experienced here.
Here we go:
I had just finished dinner about 8:30pm CST when I decided to go grab my computer bag from my car. I noticed my neighbor outside his house too, so I said hello and walked to my car.

All of a sudden, I heard the loudest BOOM I've ever heard, and the windows of my SUV shook. I then heard what sounded like a helicopter, but with more of a "WHOOMP" sound. I looked up to see a JET BLACK (flat black color) helicopter flying LOW over our subdivision. It was flying at a pretty fast speed, going northeast. I quickly ran back inside to grab my camera, because I was scared as to what I had heard (the boom) and wanted to grab a pic of whatever it was that had made that sound. I saw my neighbor just entranced in the helicopter, with a big "UH WUT" look on his face.

I ran through my hallway into my office, grabbed my 10MP camera, and ran to the backyard ( with the direction I saw the helicopter flying, it made sense to go to the back).

Sure enough I got to take 2 good pictures. I have them in higher resolution but pbucket cuts them down. If anyone could help with identification, and maybe explain the BOOOM noise which my neighbor and I have both agreed we heard, that would be great!

Also, I have extreme vertigo and my eardrum feels like its twitching. Not comfortable.

Hello Well to my experience with copters it either looks like a cobra or an Apache helicopter.

They are attack helicopters and the apache can do ariel loops.

Very interesting, I wonder what they were doing...

The blurry object in the back kind of looks like a plane with the two fins sticking up in the back.

Maybe you heard a sonic boom.

The helicopter in the second picture (single helicopter) is a Blackhawk.

The other might be an Apache.

US Army helicopters are painted a drab color that makes them look almost black from a distance.

It sounds like they are saying it is another helicopter or plane, but yes I am curious too as to what it is. OP? Did you see the second object when you were taking the pic.?

We had a shiny black one flyover downtown Birmingham this afternoon. No markings that I could see.

It was pretty striking, too. We have a lot of hospitals, including one for children, and choppers fly downtown often.

This was my first sighting of a solid black, unmarked one, however.

Creepy.

Um.. it may just be my own ignorance, but helicopters don't go boom? Right?

What makes a boom would be whatever the other thing is then? Wouldn't it?

I might just be playing cowboys and aliens over Texas in my head, but maybe?

I actually have no clue what that is...could that have been the source of the boom? a fast plane perhaps?

I ddn't. As a matter of fact, not until I downloaded the pics to the laptop that I even saw that. I was more scared of the boom and the plane. I was thinking there was shooting going on.

It's either a plane or a second helicopter.

I live in Austin and i've seen similar helicopters at Austin Bergstrom Airport...there are a couple of hangars that have National Guard in big letters on the side of them. The hangars are located on the south side of the airport off of Burleson Rd. I have seen them take off and land only a couple of times along with the big double prop helicopters, cant remember the name of those, very impressive!! As to the noise, (BOOM!), i haven't a clue...

Cheers!!!

Wish you would return and let us know if you saw whatever that is above and in front of the helicopter. Helicopters don't go boom, they don't break the sound barrier but what ever the other object is might have done so. Interesting, good for you - getting your cam!

My guess is that it is 2 Apache gunships painted drab olive leading to a dark appearance.

The helicopter is an Apache. The army paints them a very flat green color or flat tan color. The green is often mistaken for black because it reflects very very little light and against an illuminated sky, it appears black. The second object, my best guess, is a jet fighter... 2 tails... maybe FA-18 Hornet???
Anyway, what you experienced sounds like a sonic boom.

Are you near a military base? It would seem rather odd to catch a pic of BOTH an Apache helicopter AND a jet fighter breaking mach 1 all in the same pic frame!

Interesting, there are theories about the infrared spectrum which our eyes don't pick up, but cameras do.

Hmm maybe I should go outside. ^.^

I enhanced it as much as I could, but can't make out what the thing is... Weird!

And as for the boom, it came BEFORE anything appeared in the sky. When I snapped the first pic, I was trying to get a closeup of the helicopter. I didn't even see the thing in the sky. The second pic is of the helicopter taking a turn to the east. They are in order, about 10 seconds apart.

Hmmm well whatever it is , it is moving fast, because it is clearly gone in the second pic and it appears you didn't move very far from original spot. Odd you didn't notice it. I mean I think you would have been like wow did you see that other yada yada above it.

Seems you have two mysteries now my friend! Im keeping a eye on this thread for sure!

The second blurry object loosely resembles what a Stealth F117 flying away from you at that angle may appear as. Possibly your boom.
