Ats is just driving me nuts lately with crap like this. I swear all you people who honestly think this was an act of god are loony to me. I will repost the link to this pic here in this thread as i have done in the other one regarding same said topic.

Rio Jesus and lightning

Again does this mean god just cant get it right sometimes or is his power limited depending on the size of the structure. Seriously people god had nothing to do with this and if he did i think his lightning bolts would better be served by striking people instead of objects. If he is on a mission to destroy idols then he has his work cut out for him. There seems to be no logic at all on ATS anymore.

I thought people on here had some form of intellect but lately it seems to be inthe toilet. Some i know are claiming act of god as a joke but others really think that for real. God isnt going around doing any thing at all. He is not here. If he is he is watching from way off and getting a big laugh or cry either way he doesnt havehis hands in anything. I love how people tryo to rationaly use god as a reason for anythiny good happening like a miracle when he obviously lets innocents die and be slaughter for no apparent reason. For every god intervened act i can show you a thousand where he should have intervened and acted.

It frustrates me to no end to see people thinking that god has all the time in creation to really DO something and yet he chooses to burn up a insignifigant statue. Great god ya got there now if he can only do something about the damn oil leaking here in the gulf.

Face palm!!! ( i know i know i got a lightning bolt with my name on it.)

Before this post I had no idea that thing existed, it looked pretty awesome to me lol

It was made using a steel frame and the rest was foam.

How do YOU know?

Soon will We show them our Signs in the horizons, and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?
(Qur'an, 41:53)

O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning Allah save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, Son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not "Three". Cease! (it is) better for you! Allah is only One God. Far is it removed from His transcendent majesty that he should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender.
(Qur'an, 4:171)

In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. Say: "Who then has the least power against Allah, if His will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all every - one that is on the earth? For to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between. He creates what He pleases. For Allah has power over all things."
(Qur'an, 4:17)

Oh so much depends on one's perspective.

I was watching that History Channel show on Zeus. Now,being pagan, I like Zeus, but here's this history special claiming that Jesus dethroned Zeus and saying that NO ONE worshipped Zeus anymore.

(National Geographic ran a great piece about modern Greek Pagans worshipping at the old Temple of Zeus and their struggle with the orthodox Christianity insistence of their govt. couple of years back...)

About that time, WHAM, Jesus gets struck by lightening. Not that I don't like Jesus, you know...but he's not exactly known for hurling bolts of lightening... I thought to myself, then told my husband,

Zeus on the Loose

and of course he says "That wasn't Zeus, that was THOR."

And the history channel is INSISTING that primitive man held this belief, in Zeus and the Gods of Olympus, only because they were scared of the forces of nature, and that now we are SO much smarter, and we have science...

Ok....sure...no one is scared of tornados anymore. If one comes my way, I will show it my science book about weather. No need to be scared...

hey! Maybe it was electrons streaming that struck that Jesus. Maybe science killed Jesus.

Square 1.

I haven't checked out their website.I have
attended a service there once and I wasn't
impressed.I have always seen the statue
as being in poor taste and vulgar.
I just wish they wouldn't consider building
another, but they are.I would rather see the
money wasted on that monstrosity spent on
other projects, like mission fields or even local
food pantries.

Sure, go outside and hold a lighter to a rock, then watch it burn and set ablaze!
It would take a lot more than a lightning strike to make rock hot enough to become molten (not to mention the pressure required). The stature looks like it was made out of cheap plaster, and as we know god doesn't do cheap. If the statue would have been gold, then he would have been pleased.

I have to say that I am amazed. This story has become big enough to have made the Google News RSS feed for having 255 news articles. Yes, I did the thread as a tongue in cheek thread as a means of a welcomed relief of the deep seriousness and turmoil that we can all become involved in with the different news events of the world.

I would like to thank everyone that responded. The humor of the event was fairly obvious. I just figured maybe 40-50 people would pop in and have a laugh and go about their day because the world hadn't ended. Imagine my surprise at the deep conversations of all the different feelings and positions.

My personal feelings have always been that the statue was an eyesore and an affront to the true core of Christianity. I watched the thing being built. And believe me when I say that the addition of the pond actually improved the look of it.

I felt that statue did not represent God nor Jesus, but the hubris of a few people that were no better than the unrighteous huckster "TV Evangelists" that have done more to sour the image of Christianity and push more people away than have brought people towards it.

For me, that statue of Jesus was not the Jesus that would kick over the tables of the moneychangers outside the temple. It was not the Jesus that that would humbly accept his fate in the Cross and absolve the sins of mankind. And it certainly wasn't the Jesus that would walk among the people giving his teachings and inspire the Gospels.

Many do not believe in any form of religion, yet tend to follow the core of those teachings more or less, in their everyday life. Some are more outspoken on religion. Odd that they also tend to focus more on the messenger more than the message.

The discussions so far in this thread about the destruction of "Touchdown Jesus" don't come any closer to answering the who's or what's spiritually, but if you look closely there are some why's and how's to be found. And on that, I have to say that the membership never ceases to surprise me.

Suppose it bears repeating that the 'statue' had an internal metal frame....and much like the 'jesus' in Rio, lightning will tend to be attracted...

As to the "act of god" stuff. This is the finniest bit about the entire story...:

In a demonstration of God's keen sense of irony, the "Hollywood Hustler" sign at a nearby porn shop was left unscathed...

There is no mandate in the Bible that gives men the right to glorify and enrich themselves by pimping Jesus like a common twenty dollar whore. Jesus threw the money changers out of the temple. He did not sell them the franchise.

Although steel beams sunk into the ground should attract lightening, a foam case should dampen it's field potential. maybe one beam protruded somewhere near the top...that would set if off like a spark plug.

Nice post, this is symbolic for sure. A sign of our evolving structure of philosophies and religious dogmas, not just out of Christianity but for all things to be more close to their esoteric meanings.

It’s been eight years gone now and five dollar foot long Jesus still stands as the replacement. Not as fun but then again not the eyesore the original was.
