MEXICO CITY – Television station Channel 2 in Tepic, a city in the western Mexican state of Nayarit, was attacked with gunfire and grenades by unidentified individuals, prosecutors said.
The attack occurred early Monday, the Nayarit state Attorney General’s Office said, without providing details on casualties.
The broadcast facility sustained damage from “shots fired from large-caliber firearms” and a grenade that exploded, the AG’s office said.
Army troops that responded to the attack found two unexploded grenades on the station’s roof.
The National Human Rights Commission, or CNDH, condemned the incident and demanded that “these attacks not go unpunished and justice be done.”
The CNDH also called for an “effective investigation of the incident” by authorities.
“There is no justification for anyone to try to restrict the work of journalists,” CNDH president Raul Plascencia Villanueva said.
