Here is an idea!
Why don't we take some of the 2 million prisoners or the 3.8 million people on welfare or the 12 million illegals and use them to clean beaches, waterways and marshes impacted by the oil spill.
We could pay based on hours/work performed.
They would get; Free food, housing, medical benefits and all the other perks they are given now.
We would see our tax dollars hard at work in a practical way.
BP could use their "mercenaries" in a much better way by "supervising" the workers. This would be better then chancing away reporters and restricting water access.
And after the gulf is cleaned up in 5-10 years we'll have saved millions of dollars.

Or the Illegals in the US;

www.theamericanresistance.com...

The Department of Homeland Security estimated in December, 2003, that 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens resided in the United States and 700,000 new illegals enter and stay each year. These official estimates are somewhat suspect and may represent significant undercounts, as they are produced by the very entity responsible for the tidal wave of illegal aliens entering our nation nation - the United States Government. An alternative methodology is used here to estimate a range of numbers of illegals that is likely more realistic.

Sounds like slavery.

Are you advocating slavery? I really don't like this idea. It's bad enough that we still have a need for a prison system in todays "advanced society", let alone forcing them to work in dangerous conditions for free. It's bad enough that we are slaves to the economy and have to be on wellfare in the first place rather then be able to take care of ourselves due to lack of resources.

You do realize first of all you're referring to people with little to no training right?

Secondly, you're referring to people who already clog our system, because of all sorts of reasons.

So, your plan is to have them clean it up, they get sick from oil related issues?

I wonder if your next step is to have them live within camps with barbed-wire.

How about making the idiots who caused the problem fix it instead?

Round up the management, regulators, and the investment managers who failed to do their jobs properly and put them to work on it.

WHAT?!

But then they'd be working for their money!

I don't think it's appropriate to lump welfare recipients in with criminals. Most of those people have no other choice but to be on welfare.

THIS.

Plus I would make those at Goldman Sachs and Haliburton help as well. They can afford it after what they did leading up to the "accident"

Also, I collect food stamps. Am I grouped with the other people on welfare?
I wouldnt have the time to clean that up. I work 40 hours a week.
I would need to find a babysitter for my two kids that I have raised alone for the last 3 years also, while I was out cleaning up.
And the travel expenses, meals, lodging costs. That would add up to more than the welfare costs I am guessing.
I do think people abuse the welfare system, but not everyone.

Slavery??? LOL If they would be considered slaves if working for BP then what are they now???

They would be paid like they are now. They could "earn" their welfare. And if anyone read into my post things I did not say like "food stamp" recipients which work 40 hours a week.

And putting those on Welfare and prisoners in the same group I didn't say they are the same.
Just that those WHO ARE ABLE to physically work and DON'T who are on welfare and choose to not work for one reason or another should.

And as far as untrained... who are they using now to clean beaches???
Certainly not trained professionals. And if they did need training... lets see a whole 1/2 hour of PPE use and sunscreen application would be all they would need.

Tyvek suits, gloves, boots and plenty of bottled water.

Fixed it for ya. I don't know about your neck of the woods but in Alabama, most welfare recipients are just living off the system. I can show you plenty of trailer parks and projects to prove it.

I agree 100%
Take all the BP employees and have them come to the Gulf.
Have BP Setup tents and they could work too.

As far as the employees who "caused" this destruction, the poor men and women who were injured or who died in the explosion were not to blame necessarily.

We have to remember that.

Are you denouncing slavery? It is a fine, time-honoured American tradition and the source of all of our greatest values! Hard work, spending time outdoors, laying down your life in the service of this great country; yes sir, what's NOT to like about slavery!

Ironically yours,

Joe Six-Pack, esquire
