www.reuters.com

The news that the flow rate may be as high 40,000 barrels (1.68 million gallons/6.36 million liters) per day came after U.S. markets closed.

BP shares closed 6.65 percent down in London at 365.50 pence while in New York they rebounded from 14-year lows to end 12.3 percent higher at $32.78.

Zoiks!

So now all of our worst fears ...

...just DOUBLED!!!

I wonder if BPs payments will double, become faster maybe? So now that everything just doubled.... What does this mean? For Florida.. The east coast?... Europe?

This has got to be the most exhausting disaster of the last couple of years... Every day more bad news...

And now there's the assumption of the seabed leaks as well!?

Is that why this doubled?

Update: this houston chronicle article says that the doubled estimate is the bare minimum!!!

They are already revising this previously released data because of pressure from other industry leaders saying that it is far greater than previously reported. I don't think however we will ever know the real numbers.
I am willing to bet this won't be the last time that these numbers get revised.

It has to be obvious at this point that they are hiding most of the information to keep the public from panicking. I think that things are far worse than they are being reported.

I can't wait to see how the stocks do tomorrow.....

Is now a good time to buy gold?

"It's X amount. No, wait, its 2X."

Ummmm.....yeah, that really inspires confidence.

The New York Times notes that there seems to be a concerted effort to limit media coverage of the spill these days. Airplanes are being denied permission for flyovers, etc.

2002 was the time to buy gold.

Sorry.

I would have thought that stocks would have dropped today, but the global stock market was up again today
. My guess is that disaster capitalism is moving right along, not to mention the arms sales industry
. Cleanup actions have been profiteered and privatized.
Eventually they will double the figures again, which will still be HALF of the real figures. I would imagine that BP will be bought out for pennies on the dollar and majority ownership by a govt run bank.

What is the deeper reason that these people are compelled to lie about the destruction of not only marine life, but potentially the industry and lives of people who will be effected by this.

I suppose the reason is money, but what underneath causes this greed?

It will be proven beyond 100,000 bpd.

Neither BP nor the government have a interest in providing the real number right now.

My friends, it has not doubled.....

The corporate boys' bravado for bald-face lying just halved.

It seems like an example for the history books, they swore it was, what was it, 5,000 at one point? Now their 'recovering' (partially) some 15,000 a day? That they were lying is not only evident, it's screaming in our faces.

Can they be trusted even now? This debacle is shameful enough that someone should be held accountable. And I'm not talking about some engineer or mid-level manager.

Sadly, it appears the the focus of this operation has remained one of continued access to the resource, and protection of investment assets....

Our federal government's new slogan should be: "Corporate America, we're taking 'risk' out of the equation, invest today!"

By the way, has anyone ever seen a corporation get 'sovereign nation' rights in our territorial waters before? ..... Think along the lines of the East India Trading Company.

I don't give a F what they're saying. Anyone who believes these numbers are ignorant fools. The freaking casing is leaking from the seabed, it's leaking at multiple locations. The one which I've seen recently seems like an underwater volcano, and these brilliant idiots are giving us these kinds of figures? Bite me. I'm sorry but I'm pissed off. I wouldn't be surprised if it's leaking +1,000,000 barrels a day, and the site contains + 1 billion barrels. All I know is that these bastards aren't giving us squat for real information. They cave in and tell us just a little more when they must.

Good one.

I cannot help but think how short people's horizons (no pun intended) have become in terms of being held accountable for what they say. There is no question that in the "old days," people in official positions thought much more carefully about what they said because they knew it could come back to haunt them. Now it seems like with corporations and government, people just say whatever they want, thinking "well, I can change it later if I really need to, I guess." The net result is a society where accountablity, and hence trust, is increasingly vanishing.

Well is'nt that just dandy, so now we are going to have probably the worst oil spill of all time. Thanks for the black sea BP and whomever else may have been involved. Damn it, I wish I could strangle all those corporate execs with their own ties.

A methane burp can not only sink a ship but if you fly into methane you suddenly more than double your stall speed. CH4 = 12 + 4 = 16 H20 2 + 2*18 = 2 + 36 = 38 because the molecules are lighter.. there is less lift if you have the nasty luck to fly over the sea during a massive hydrate burp.

I bet this hazard gets announced soon.

We watched the sparkling hydrate crystals for weeks pouring out in such quantity that people thought it was fire...

I imagine much of the gaseous methane is dissolving in gulf waters as it rises and as it rises it expands... the pressure down there is 5000 psi so as the frothy 'bubbles rise, they increase in volume

Sea Level = 15 PSI

Sea Bed = 5000 PSI
those methane bubbles you saw... they will expand 5000 / 15 = 333 TIMES as they move to the surface AFTER the water is completely saturated with the stuff... When enough water gets saturated and then gets disturbed in some way.. we could have weeks of gas and hydrate suddenly boil to the surface, perhaps causing a wave... and sinking whatever is in the water above it.

They lie and underestimate EVERYTHING, just like the Gaza crisis, haiti crisis, Iraqi civilian deaths, water flouridation, food abundance, economic recovery, medical statistics, foreign austerity practices, and on and on. They are not ready to completely crash the system yet. They want to lower the boom slowly so one day we wake up in a cage and wonder how it happened. It isn't the money, it's the power trip. Power is a commodity while money is a tool. As long as we continue to rely on THEIR tools, the stronger their grip. When we become too much of a problem, they open the toolbox and pull out another tool. Usually a health condition (Swine Flu, GMO food, chemtrailing, perscription side effects, etc), or a military action. Fear is a precursor to power, and they play that card every chance they get. But when the select few question their purpose and motive, they downplay it or cover it up. The MSM is part of their plan.
Just like in The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, when the grinch got caught by Suzie while he was trying to steal the tree. "There's a light out on this tree, so I'll take to my shop and fix it there, and bring it back here".
There's alot of lil Suzies out there

I can't say I'm surprised in the slightest. It's typical of big companies like BP to try and downplay the true extent of the damage they've caused. It shows that even when faced with disaster such as this, they are more concerned with their own appearance. It's all about PR.
