Good post OP but i already knew like everyone that the government wasn't letting us know the full damage of the this spill. It's there job. And another thing they're doing is hiring people for the news to say "Its a not a big deal, we've been drilling there for 50 years and its only happened once".
If your wondering what the hell I'm talking about. Take a look at this fox news broadcast. Its bull# I'm about 100% sure all of the people being interviewed are actors or just complete morons.

Why is the US government not commiting any and all resources to fixing this? Why are there not entire shifts of teams working round the clock to find a solution?

Where is the international community in this matter? Why are there not researchers, scientists and engineers from across the entire globe working in conjunction with BP and the US government to fix this mess?

Why are we not as a planet throwing every single idea/resource/available dollar into correcting this massive disaster?

Maybe mother nature needs to just shake the fleas off and rid herself of this scourge of human existence once and for all. Maybe this is mother Earth telling us that we have gone too far.

Why do you count only human lives? what about the millions of animals that die, dont they count? we dont take a separate part in the ecosystem, animals die, everything dies, because everything is interconnected

People don't get the connectedness yet. The animals don't count to those people.
They should be praying to the animals that give them life (food).
But it is just a hunk of fur or feathers, who cares, right?

I'll take it one step further. They also don't care about the staggering amount of plant life that will be killed off by this catastrophe. Once you realize that 80% of the oxygen on this planet comes from the aquatic vegetation, it becomes a hell of a lot more important all of a sudden.
In the end, THAT is why I believe this could be an extinction level event.

I FEAR the unknown about this oil spill. I don't fear many things in life, but this makes me go numb in the brain. I think we 'broke' part of the planet in a big way here. A way that might haunt us for decades and change lives forever.
I think we are only seeing the beginning of how bad this could get...not trying to be alarmist.
This is a SHTF scenario with no end in sight I'm afraid.
I agree, we have to had broken something vital to the earth. I'm sure there is a purpose for all that oil being under the ocean floor and it is there for a reason.
We have disturbed the natural course of the earth. We are altering the way nature works. We have NO IDEA what this oil spill will do to us and the earth. Soon, we will have a rude awakening. We cant count on our government most the time, but we can count on mother nature to surprise the crap out of us.
You bet we disturbed it. We have punctured the life of our Mother Earth. Her veins are spilling blood.
Those who are preaching NONSENSE are running scared. They just do not want to face what they KNOW to be truth.
However, this will bring humanity together ... to find a solution and to learn to work WITH our Earth and not against her. She is a living, sentient being. Let's start treating her that way.

I've been wondering. Has anyone taken into consideration oil being drawn up into the atmosphere with the water to come back down in the form of rain? I mean hurricanes and other storms drawn in huge amounts of water, won't this spread the oil, though smaller amounts, further inland? Won't that have an effect on crops? On cattle grazing on this mixture? Or won't the amount be enough to bother?
