Mysterious light with spiral tail seen in Aussie sky

The rocket would not be visible until it left the Earth's shadow as it traveled toward the sunrise.

This is commonly seen with satellites, they will appear overhead as they enter sunlight or disappear as they leave it.

They are about to report it here on National news down here. Let's see what the media says about it.

There was no danger. The rocket was launched in Florida, over the Atlantic Ocean. If there had any danger the rocket would have been destroyed over the ocean. It was in orbit when it passed over Australia. Things don't just fall out of orbit without warning.

If it was lauched from Florida over the ATLANTIC why did 100's of people see the boody thing flying over Australia.

You do know we are in the PACIFIC ocean, anyway this thing was massive, too big to be a Rocket.

Far as we know Australia didn't launch any rocket's, so thats that theory gone.

Right. And the space shuttles are launched from Florida and no one any where else in the world ever sees them. Or the ISS. Or the hundreds of other satellites in orbit.

2. Because most people don't have the proper equipment to zoom in and make an educated guess.

Satellites entering and leaving sunlight is common.

Seeing a rocket stage spewing fuel is not common. I didn't say it was. It takes the right timing to be visible. Australia was lucky. The Sun was rising as the rocket passed overhead, spewing left over fuel.

All National Nine News in Australia just said was that "astronomers say it could be a rocket or space junk."

Channel 9 spoke to an astronomer at the Observatory in Sydney and he said it was a rocket launch from Cape Canaveral - Falcon 9.



Hmmm....I do NOT buy it.

Well this is simple. it called an ORBIT. It may have been launched over the Atlantic, but rocket stages are jettisoned over ocean areas in case they re enter the earth atmosphere. Being the Falcon 9 is a low orbit mission, it may have well been a rocket stage gone off balance over the Pacific.
Unless you can find out the exact trajectory and orbit path, then we can't confirm or deny this.
Occams Razor should be looked at here. Spiral in the morning in Australia, before sunrise. Rocket launch less then 24 hours before, and a rocket that releases stages.
So you can read to much into it, like most people are on here, but my guess, and I say guess, if that its just a rocket stage from the Falcon 9.
Being that it was seen on the east coast, just before sunrise, I would say the gases from the stage release were reflected by the rising sun below.
The media are saying the same thing by the way, just watching it on the news now as I type this.

Damn!, i just missed the story on channel Nine news about this. Did anyone catch it? Can you fill me in? I didnt see it personally, i wish i did. Just a few thoughts i'm having..

1. I heard on the news headlines - they think it might have been a rocket ship that caused the spiral - what part of the rocket would make such a phenomenon appear - if so, why haven't we seen anything like this before?

2. Isn't this similar to the Norway Spiral seen a while ago?

If this was the case it would have been seen in the North East sky not in the South East going to the East.

Never the less were lucky to see such a sight..

Thanks Phage i understand the sat thing, just didnt realize this object could look so big from ground level. i suppose you get that from a low orbit

Its also amazing how many people saw it, and more odd how many explained it differently which i think needs to be noted. especially the direction it was travelling

The National 9 News in Sydney claimed that "it was probably the Falcon 9". They didn't state for certain. They are just like the rest of us - waiting for further information to either prove or disprove.

Hopefully, Spacex (or someone else) will soon clear things up and provide an orbital track plus timing of the second stage de-orbit.

It does seem to tie in thou with the launch, and why was it seen only on the east coast if it WAS travelling west to east, I made a post about the truckies crossing the nullabor, this thing would of turned night into day in the desert, where are the reports from them or country towns
