According to this Associated Press report, asserts that the US-Mexico border is among the safest areas in the US. Here are some quiotes from the article that you can glance at:

"The top four big cities in America with the lowest rates of violent crime are all in border states: San Diego, Phoenix, El Paso and Austin, according to a new FBI report. And an in-house Customs and Border Protection report shows that Border Patrol agents face far less danger than street cops in most U.S. cities.

The Customs and Border Protection study, obtained with a Freedom of Information Act request, shows 3 percent of Border Patrol agents and officers were assaulted last year, mostly when assailants threw rocks at them. That compares with 11 percent of police officers and sheriff's deputies assaulted during the same period, usually with guns or knives".

I do not know what the think of this study, since as an American, I have always assumed that the border was dangerous. I would like to see what my fellow ATSers have to say about this study.

All I can say is this:

I think that everyone who participated by way of getting statistics for the study, should be forced to live on a piece of property, right on the border, after their results.

It might make a whole lot of difference in the statistics, if they have to live it.

I think that might be a good idea. I know some people here on ATS that live in the border region and they think it sucks. I wonder if those involved in the study would think the same as well.

A few things to say...
1. If you've just made a big effort to cross the border illegally, is it wise that one of the first things you'll do, is commit a crime?
2. If your an immigrant looking to earn money through either work (or crime) do you stay in the border States where there's a constant supply, of other people, competing with you. Or do you move to the big cities like Washington, New York, ect where there are less people, in your position, competing with you?
3. The statistics hardly indicate crime would be lower if there was no immigration. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of crime is going under reported; what is the likelihood of the cops really catching somebody the state knows little-nothing about?

Flat out B.S.

All you have to do is tune in to the local news in any one of those four cities, and it's blatantly obvious that none of them could be considered the "safest", unless the only other cities in the study were Baghdad, Falujah and Kabul.

I think that there is alot of unreported crime in that area. I know people woh live around the border, including fellow ATSers, who say its bad. Taking that into consideration, I think that it is safe to assume that crime involving illegals goes unreported more often then not.

I agree with you on that, but this study only takes reported crimes into account. I think that illustrates the extent of unreported crime in those areas. Do a study of people who live along the border and I am sure that you would see a different picture of how safe it is there.

How much of that crime against normal police men were committed by illegals? More than the percentage than the border patrols encounter? Is that because he border patrols are just not able to catch them all, and thus they commit crimes AFTER in the country? Or am I just paranoid?

Not at all, that would make sense to me. Think about it, if there are alot of unaccounted for people in this country, then it would make sense for there to be alot of unaccounted for crimes.

Austin? Living in Austin myself I can say that I don't understand how this hippie ass town made it on the list. Of course our crime rate is low, everybody smokes weed!

Ok, good. I thought I was delusional. Everyone seems to think most of the illegals are helping our country in wonderful ways, and none of them ever do anything bad. And if you say you're opposed to letting illegals run rampant, you're a racist. Glad there's someone else on my side.

Oh, good lord, I knew there was a good reason for hating Texas. I'll blame it all on Austin!

I guess one wouldn't notice a bunch of illegals next to them, if they are taking siestas often, and only wake up to binge eat garbage!

Lord please, don't ever make the shortest route to anywhere, a drive through, Texasssssssssssssssss!

Ya'all probably run all over with illegals, and too busy enjoying yourselves to even notice!

Disgusting!

Thats probably the point of it. With the current shizstorm going on in this country, this would appear like one less bad thing the government needs to address. Between this and the blown baseball call last night, the government must be enjoying the distractions from the oil leak and the Israel crap.

I live on the border and it is very safe, kids can play in the street without even getting shot at and everything....

All this violence talk happens on the MEXICAN side of the border and if ur involved in the drug trade....

If ur on the US side and not involved with drugs in anyway then everything is fine....i even hear the birds churp in my neighborhood

Uhhh, right. Austin is actually not full of illegals. We have an unemployment rate below 7% so not much for them to do here. I was just making a joke and you made yourself look like a fool. Disgusting!

So the propaganda campaign begins to try and make AZ and other states look bad for wanting to protect thier borders. Yeah border patrol don't get in a many altercations as street cops LOL apples and oranges. BP doesn't look for all type of crime they are just looking for illegals who are trying to hide from them. Street cops repsond to all sorts of altercations everyday... Amazing

Why not media propaganda has worked for everything else. I am sure the dumbass populace will be believing in no time there is no real problem at the southern border and agree with congress to punish AZ and the others...Sigh.
