I think one of the most versatile methods of drumming is to try and master 7/8. It really has to be solid, but once you have total cognizance of where your next drum beat is going to land, it can be used all over the kit with ease. I found this "Orlando Drummer" video as a superb example of how this timing is developed and played.

Orlando Drummer

Again, drumming and numbers. Inseparable.
Could it be that most ATS members are good at numbers as well? A correlation that may be part of the OP's premise.

I've banged on a drum or two.

The bass player started giving me dirty looks, so I stopped doing that. Anyone got a tambourine?

When a bass player gives you dirty looks, it's time to take notice!

In my experience, the bass player was the one I worked with the most. They create the backbone of a tune, while I, as a drummer reinforce it with the beat. Together, we make the meat of any given song. The guitars make it fancy and the singer makes it popular to the audience.

A true perspective of a drummer.

Tambourines are nice and versatile. A drummer can have one mounted to the high-hat, or it can be given to any random guest, such as a vocalist. As long as a basic understanding of timing is achieved, it can be used. Hippies love em!

It's that foot thing.

I can't get my foot to work right. Foot. Right foot.

I play drums...occasionally. Hardly classify myself as a drummer however.

• How do you tell if the stage is level?
The drummer is drooling from both sides of his mouth.

• How can you tell a drummer's at the door?
The knocking speeds up.

• What's the last thing a drummer says in a band?
"Hey guys, why don't we try one of my songs?

• What do you call a drummer that breaks up with his girlfriend?
Homeless.

• How can you tell when a drummer's at the door?
He doesn't know when to come in.

Yup, the "foot thing" is the thing that makes most people inspiring to be drummers give up. It's a hurdle, but once overcome, great things can happen.

I assume you are referring to this guy --

Quite impressive. You have two feet as well!

Unless, you you have a peg leg you didn't tell us about! If that's true my utmost apologies. BUT.....Rick allen of Def Leppard has one arm, yet he still kills it!

I'll put a vid up if someone requests it, otherwise... it's pretty common knowledge.

That's the guy. (Polo player as well. At least, he was. He's pretty old now.)

I do have two feet. They're not much use except for locomotion though.

Christian Vander is God.

While God thinks he's Buddy Rich :p

Until Christian Vander made God in Buddy's image.

How's that for compromise?
