Germany takes a turn at guarding Icelandic airspace


Why is that the German Airforce much watch over Icelands airspace between 7th and 25th June? We now that Iceland has no military on its own. But is ther a thread or something? I search for answers in Englisch and German languages but nothing to find! So is ther anybody who nows more?

The German airforce, the Luftwaffe will protect Icelandic airspace between 7th and 25th June.
The German force will be temporarily stationed in Iceland at the invite of the Icelandic government and its patrols will form part of the NATO security pact for Iceland, which has no military of its own.
Around 140 German pilots and support crew will be based in Iceland along with several F-4 Phantom aircraft. This is the first time that the Luftwaffe has participated in protecting Icelandic airspace. Among the other nations which have are France, Denmark and the USA.

The German F-4 Phantom tandem two-seat, twin-engined, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor fighter/fighter-bombers will land at Keflavik Airport on 1st June, Visir.is reports.

The German team members will familiarise themselves with the area and practice landings at Keflavik, Akureyri and Egilsstadir between the 2nd and 6th June.

Not sure, Iceland doesnt really have a threat from anyone.

Das Jagdgeschwader 71 "Richthofen" wird dieses Jahr vom 25. Mai 2010 bis zum 2. Juli 2010 mit sechs Jagdflugzeugen vom Typ F-4F "Phantom" nach Keflavik auf Island verlegen, um dort die Sicherung des isländischen Luftraums zu übernehmen.

Nun wird erstmals auch der isländische Luftraum überwacht. Island verfügt über keine eigenen Luftstreitkräfte und hat nach Abzug der amerikanischen Luftstreitkräfte im Jahr 2006 mit Hilfe der Anrainerstaaten des Nordatlantiks die Luftraumüberwachung gewährleistet. Mit der Unterstützung für die baltischen Staaten und Island setzt Deutschland mit dem "Richthofen-Geschwader" als ausführendem Jagdverband ein deutliches Zeichen zur Bereitschaft seinen Verpflichtungen im Rahmen der Bündnissolidarität nachzukommen.

Das Vorkommando, bestehend aus technischem sowie fliegendem Personal startete am 25. Mai 2010 mit einer Transall von Wittmundhafen in Richtung Island. Das Hauptkommando folgt am 29. Mai 2010 und kehrt voraussichtlich am 27. Juni 2010 nach Wittmund zurück. Ein Schiff mit den rund 45 Containern Material und Fahrzeugen benötigt knappe sechs Tage, um Island zu erreichen. Dort angekommen, werden die Container und Fahrzeuge vom Vorkommando in Empfang genommen. Das bereits vor Ort befindliche Personal hat den Auftrag, das Material soweit vorzubereiten, dass ein reibungsloser Einsatz der Kampfflugzeuge vom Typ F-4F "Phantom" zum 31. Mai 2010 gewährleistet werden kann.

Basically the article states that its mainly a NATO thing (Iceland is in the NATO too) and since it has no airforce of its own it gets protection from other member states.

They are sending some phantoms F-4 (witch are not the newest and best ones)
