Pakistanis Create Rival 'Muslim Facebook'

Pakistanis outraged with Facebook over "blasphemous" caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed have created a spin-off networking site that they dream can connect the world's 1.6 billion Muslims.

A group of six young IT professionals from Lahore, the cultural and entertainment capital of Pakistan, launched millatfacebook.com on Tuesday for Muslims to interact online and protest against blasphemy.

The private venture came after a Pakistani court ordered a block on Facebook until May 31, following deep offence over an "Everyone Draw Mohammed Day" page considered "blasphemous" and "sacrilegious". "Millatfacebook is Pakistan's very own, first social networking site. A site for Muslims by Muslims where sweet people of other religions are also welcome," the website tells people interested in signing up.

Dubbed MFB, after Facebook's moniker FB, its founder says professionals are working around the clock to offer features similar to those pioneered by the wildly popular California-based prototype. Each member has a "wall" for friends to comment on. The site offers email, photo, video, chat and discussion board facilities.

So I went to the site: MFB

So I plan to do just that only because I am curious to see how similar it is to the real FB. If TPTB monitor the real FB, they are going to be all over this one imo. Based on those numbers, over 83,000 this seems to be catching on.

Pakistani militant groups are increasingly supporting each other and penetrating into the country's heartland, threatening not only Pakistan but the region.

The Pakistan Taliban who attacked two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore on Friday trained in the militant stronghold of North Waziristan and arrived in the city a week before the assaults.

"They have links with Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the arrested attacker told us that his brother is working with the group in Miran Shah," said Akram Naeem Bharoka, a police spokesman in Lahore.

Miran Shah is the main town of North Waziristan, a rugged land which has been a traditional rebel hideout, and considered a stronghold for TTP militants.

Ties like these between the Pakistan Taliban and Punjab groups and organizations are worrying to Pakistan and its ally, the United States.

The important part of the article though is this:

MILITANT GROUPS LINKING

A land of high and difficult hills with deep and rugged valleys suitable for guerrilla warfare, North Waziristan has served as a safe haven for Islamist militants since the 1980s, when Pakistan acted as a frontline state in the U.S.-backed jihad, or holy war, against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

The ethnic Pashtun tribal lands, particularly North and South Waziristan, became a hub of Islamist militants after al Qaeda and Taliban operatives, fleeing a U.S.-led offensive in Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks in 2001, took refuge there and forged ties with Pakistani militants.

But the area has since turned into a hub for a wide variety of militant groups.

The militants operating from North Waziristan can roughly be divided into four categories:

* al Qaeda linked militants, including Arabs, Uzbeks, Chechens and Chinese Muslims who have focused their fighting in their native countries as well as in the West

* Afghan Taliban, led by militant commander Jalaluddin Haqqani, who are fighting Western forces in Afghanistan

* Pakistani Taliban fighting the Pakistani state

* "Punjabi Taliban" suspected of fueling militancy in central Pakistan

These militant groups apparently pursue independent agendas, but cooperate if they share objectives, security officials say.

I think this has a lot to do with why strategies that worked in the war before are having to constantly evolve because the enemy is constantly evolving, linking their numbers, as well as their common goals.

The MFB could be a great front for communication. Of course they're not going to make it obvious. I would be willing to bet that if TPTB want it shut down, this would be a likely story to use.

I was thinking the same thing, I am very curious to see the architecture of the site. They need to hurry and get those servers up and running. It says check back in 24hrs but doesn't say anything about what time it went down for the server upgrade. I'll just keep periodically checking and post a screen shot of the homepage when it's back up.

Muslims take the Qur'an seriously. imagine if a whole bunch of people drew pictures(insulting or not) of say a hero figure.. a massively important figure in your historical and religious history. When you are a muslim you have a family of 1.5 billion people(and growing larger).

Just because they decided to make a new facebook is no reason to ridicule them for it. Not to mention the stereotypes of an entire demographic because of a small minority.

A website dedicted to Muslims, and plus this information about the Taliban and other extremists connecting via web, this is a perfect resource for them.

I doubt that the founders of FB are the ones performing the DDOS attacks, he's got far too much clout to give a damn about Pakistan.
