I watched the press confrence live and there were no flags. I thought it was odd at the time, but now it makes sence to me.

We'll have to make sure that the President checks with you on which methods of disrespecting the flag are acceptable from now on.

Also, to bagari: I was a big culprit when it came to calling Bush 'Dubya', or even G-Dub, as I was fond of. I was doing it out of disrespect, made no bones about it, and never tried to back-peddle.

In retaliation and to make sure our President understands the importance of our flag at all times, I suggest every American adorn their homes, cars, and person with American flags all weekend long. Loads of them.

I believe Obama needs a refresher course in whom he actually is supposed to represent.

You and I actually do agree on that. As in, we can both acknowledge there is a segment that does use 'Hussein' as a jab.

And in this thread's case and knowing the OP, WWJFKD is good people.

Well he did say he didn't use it for that reason...and you are vouching for him...and I think someone else did as well...I'm not going to put words into someones mouth...so I'll take him at his word that wasn't his intention.

But...seeing that we do know that some people do use it as a jab...and that this post was, IMO, an over the top attack at Obama...it was easy for me to make the connection that I assumed he meant using his name also as a jab. Yes...I assume things sometimes...I know it's not the best thing to do...but sometimes the pieces seem to fit.

So yes...off of the bunny trail...back on topic.

1). Is he really the only president to not speak in the presence of the flag?

It would appear not. I posted a video of Bush, granted he was in China but he still had no flag at his press conference and he was the only one on stage at the time. Someone else just posted a video of Reagan where there appears to be no flag...the initial shot is a fairly wide shot and so unless the flag is far off to the left or right...there is no flag on the stage. Definately no flag behind him.

2). Is that a legitimate image and not cropped to remove the flag?

There was definately no flag at Obama's press conference yesterday. That was the first thing I did when I saw this post was to go look...I saw wide angle pictures and saw a video on youtube that showed most of the stage.

I am not arguing that there was no flag...just that it wasn't the first time and I really don't see it as an important issue...not even an issue at all.

3). If legitimate, what are the actual reasons the flag was not used.

Who knows??? Some intern forgot...some staffer was slacking...or of course there is what the OP is implying and that is Obama personally instructed there to be no flag there.

He has a flag pin on his coat...I don't think it was a big anti-American statment being made.

It would be silly of me to speculate...I don't think anyone would have a good answer to this.

It's just going to come down to a difference of opinion on what's important, I guess. It seems that this has devolved into nothing but a war of ideologies anyway. Sorry for flinging poo, it was uncivilized. I think we should all just move on, as no one's mind is going to be changed about anything here.

10. Modification of rules and customs by President

Any rule or custom pertaining to the display of the flag of the United States of America, set forth herein, may be altered, modified, or repealed, or additional rules with respect thereto may be prescribed, by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States, whenever he deems it to be appropriate or desirable; and any such alteration or additional rule shall be set forth in a proclamation

So I guess he repealed it's use for this conference which was his right to do so and went with a nice yellow background instead...(crickets)

Come on guys basic marketing here - power tie, kind of thing - look like the President in a countries time of need just days before memorial day.

Is he just that classless?

I agree, this thread should be closed. It's not worth talking about.

You have two sides. The first side being the people that don't see this as an issue. They believe that yes, the flag is an important symbol to the United States, but not so important that if it's not visible in a measly press conference that the New World Order is imminent and President Obama is a socialist un-in-de-whatever-patriotic jerkwad. The second side is just the opposite of that. Since the flag wasn't in the background it means that President Obama is intentionally or unintentionally insulting the American people and that he is a socialist and is trying to denationalize the United States, argh blah blah blah!

In other words, some people are just a wee bit too sensitive, and need to find other things to bitch and moan about

It just wasn't there. They zoomed out before it started and I didn't see a flag in the room. So I have no Idea. Also I don't think there was a flag at the podium in Grand Isle today either.

Fine, it's representative of something important. But the moment the SYMBOL outweighs ACTIONS, it's just another piece of propaganda...a false idol. It becomes something more powerful than itself, but not in a good way.

The swastika was a symbol with different meanings for different people. But when its mean surpassed itself - when it became something much bigger than its inherent meaning - when it was enough to propagandize the public at large...well, that was when it ceased to be a mere symbol and stepped into the role of control. We see where that landed.

If others have gone without it as well, there is an American flag on his lapel, and we don't know for sure the reason behind it, then I personally conclude there is no issue and no reasonable position to take either way unless we bring preconceived notions into the mix, which is unfair.

Repealed what? I reviewed the US flag code before I posted it to see if it said anything about it being required for it to be at every press conference of the President...there is nothing in there that says it is required, suggested, or even mentioned at all.

Here is what it says about when it SHOULD (not required..but should) be displayed.

§6. Time and occasions for display
a.It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
b.The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
c.The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed.
d.The flag should be displayed on all days, especially on
◦New Year's Day, January 1
◦Inauguration Day, January 20
◦Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, third Monday in January
◦Lincoln's Birthday, February 12
◦Washington's Birthday, third Monday in February
