Yes, that was the effect i've been trying for hours and hours to achieve!

I suspect i have been doing something wrong, i feel like a bit of an idiot.

What did you do? Simply greyscale the background and fiddle around with the contrast and brightness?

In my defense - before today i've never used a paint programme (except for really elementary things) and it's a new experience for me.

Yes, but I use Photoshop 7. I can't really afford the upgrade. Someone gave me Photoshop years ago because they couldn't figure it out.

ATS needs a tutorial for creating avatars. I personally would like to learn to use Gimp, but still haven't gotten around to trying it out or looking up a tutorial :/
