WASHINGTON - Republicans argued Tuesday that it would put the nation's finances at risk if Congress gave aiing Sept. 11 responders a permanent, guaranteed program to ensure they get health care.

Calling the Sept. 11 Health and Compensation Act a new "entitlement program" like Medicare, GOP members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee argued the nation already has too much that it must pay for. They said obligating the feds for lifetime care of tens of thousands of 9/11 responders was too much of a burden.

"By making this a new mandatory program, you jeopardize the financial health of the United States of America," said Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.).
And they argued that the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001, were already being cared for, noting the $150 million the Obama recently requested for this year.

That right Republicans, give the Democrats even more ammunition to use against you in Nov. midterm elections. It's going to take more than just anti Obama rhetoric to win back the house and senate.

So the GOP will vote for taxbreaks and subsidies for oil companies but not for health care for first responders. Brilliant!

Well In reality it’s not the federal governments responsibility to do that. New York City, New Your State, WTC Insurance, Frozen funds of Bin Laden, Pay outs from the lawsuits against the airlines. Those should have been responsible for caring for the first responders, not the Federal Government....

And besides didn’t that just pass a health care bill that allows all Americans to get Insurance now? Why do they get a "better" treatment? If need be Retro-act the responders to the military and send them to the VA?

We the people are meant to support the Feds, not the Feds meant to support us.

I noticed how you convienently sidesteped the issue of our tax dollars going for oil subsudies and tax breaks the American people can't enjoy; to companies that are already showing record profits.

Do you think that the libs won't use this heartless, callous mindset against the GOP come nov? They will and they should!

Favoring the wealth of large corps over the health of heros is dispicable.

Seems to me a clear cut case of letting ideology get in the way of common sence and moral principals.
