'Do you want to grow up to be terrorists?': U.S. soldier under investigation for 'disgraceful' Facebook video of Iraqi children

www. dailymail.co.uk

A U.S. soldier is under investigation for posting a ‘disgraceful’ video on his Facebook page, taunting Iraqi children by asking if they are gay, engage in sex acts and if they would grow up to be terrorists.
The two young boys did not appear to understand the questions, which were in English, but smiled at the camera and at times flashed the ‘thumbs up’ gesture during the 30-second clip.

Unbelievable, disgusting, appaling, immoral any of these words are apt to describe this behavior on the part of this soldier. While the vast majority of these soldiers are most likely good, decent people (I like to give folks the benefit of the doubt) it's garbage like this that will irreparably damage the reputation of the United States on a global scale.

Not to mention the fact that the occupation was launched on false pretenses (no WMDs) through the Bush Doctrine's pre-emptive strike philosophy, which is classified as a war of aggression and as such is illegal in international law. Anything associated with Dubya is already on a shaky foundation globally. I'm sure they realize this at the Pentagon so I'm guessing this guy will be made an example of.

That’s all they did??? We use to jive back and forth with these kids all the time... This isn’t a criminal act, this happens every day. It’s not like he was torturing them.... Stealing, Raping, Etc.etc. He made some distasteful remarks, oh well nothing to see here.

As much as I hate to say It I have to agree here. This while contemptible is no big deal in the big picture. Its definitely not worth destroying someones life over.

Yeah, I understand that nothing criminal went on in the video. I also understand that one of the ways you win a conflict is to win the hearts and minds of those aborad and at home. People are going to use this as more ammunition and as cases build up the rational for the occupation will be less and less adequate. It's not that what the soldier did is so wrong, he's fooling around with some kids and it's not a big deal, it's the perception. People will paint this with broad brush strokes to further demonize all American troops.

Should the soldier get some sort of punishment? I think he should, get at least an Admin Article 15, thats nothing its like a detention 7 days extra duty and 7 days restriction. I dont think he should be hammered, also someone needs to smack him for posting the damn video on facebook.

Yeah, he should really be disciplined for sheer stupidity, for posting it on Facebook in the first place, rather than for his actions (which happens everyday). I'm not up on US Armed Forces law, but here in the UK, he'd be brought up on charges of bringing the Forces into disrepute. He shouldn't lose his job or anything, but he should certainly get a punishment he won't forget in a hurry.

Rightly said nik1halo.

To be honest, he's representing the whole Force and not doing it very well. Personally, I believe that people like him are one of the probably reasons why people grow up to be terrorists. I'm not saying he is, he's just one of the factors. Emotions such as hate could arise from the children, and they are to be honest, very influenced at that age.

are you serious?

as if none of you have ever messed with your little niece/nephew/brother/sister/kid by asking them questions they will surely not understand, to see their confused reaction?

this is an age old upperhand one gets when they learn a new provocative vocabulary word...

example:

kid a: "Hey are you a virgin?!?!?!!"

kid b: "whats a virgin?"

kid a: "you HAVE to answer first!!!!"

kid b: "no"

kid a: "EEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWW"

comes as no shock to me this soldier still has the mindstateof a 6 year old. but i wouldnt move us to defcon 5 or anything over it.....

Oh my, he said something distasteful? Cry me a river, come on, that is all he did and members of the news media think they have a story here? They must be getting desperate, if I were the editor, I would have looked this report over and pushed it aside. Those Iraqi kids probably had no idea what the soldiers were saying to begin. I will admit it was in poor taste, but nothing to get agitated about. It is very insulting and disrespectful, but when did poor taste become a crime?

People insult each other everyday. Now, if this soldier did the unthinkable and unloaded on those kids after saying the remark, then we can get angry and have much to talk about. This is just some weak attempt by a reporter to meet their deadline, because they have nothing more substantial to submit. Reporters do it all the time. All in all, whomever said that remark in the video, and the guy who posted it online; both have a crude sense of humor. That is all I can take away from this story.

Another dem-lib (from Canada?) "trash the U.S. military" thread (check for the footprints I have in my signature).

These kids older brothers or fathers could just as easily be the ones planting IEDs.

Not really much to see here, eh?

Move along ...

Racist? How?

You wouldn't know a racist if they kicked you in the a$$.

Go look up the definition of the word before you waste anyone else's time throwing it around.

I'm not bashing the US military, centurion. Where do I specifically say that I dislike anything about your armed forces? To the contrary, I deeply respect your fighting men and women. I'm simply bringing attention to the fact that this piece received mild attention by the foreign press. Again, I have great respect for the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. But, individual lapses in judgement like this video being posted to Facebook are not going to help them win international support for the mission in Iraq when it's already on shaky ground as is.

Unfortunately judging by this post at the bottom of the source website some of the soldiers don't actually understand that just because something can be 'legal' or perceived as 'harmless' it doesn't make it morally right:

So what? The kids didn't understand him. Have any of you spent time in a desert warzone? Not much to do. It's innocent joking that improves morale and keeps soldiers from getting bored.

NONE of, and I strongly repeat that, NONE of the soldiers I know would behave like this. EVER

Its not even possible for them.

This type of crap is disgusting and really puts all of us in a very bad light.
