Hi.
I'm Monkeyfister.
I live-blogged all of that all day. Little sleep. But all the images are real. I wrote it as I witnessed it. Lots of other folks were watching, too.
I sure would like to better understand what I saw. Three major eruptions in less than 24-hours. I've been pretty glued to SpillCam all week, and have seen nothing as violent as what happened today.
Is it possible that the riser pipe is acting like a giant garden heater coil, and thawing hydrates, and forcing them up? That's my only gues as to what I saw... beside casing failure. I don't know which would be worse.

It doesn't seem possible to have an underwater explosion. To my knowledge, neither the escaping gas or oil will burn without the addition of atmospheric oxygen. Please correct my speculation if it is wrong.

Y&ou are correct. Neither crude nor methane will burn in the absence of oxygen. Nor will it explode underwater (or anywhere else since it doesn't propogate a burn through shockwave.)

I just don't understand everyone complaining that too little action is being taken. BP definitely wishes this whole mess would go away so they can go about rebuilding their brand name. The government is deploying thousands of nation guardsman to help clean up the spill. The Army corp of engineers has been consulting with BP's engineers through the entire process. Obama has formed a team of engineers, from military to NASA, to help assist with the process to stop this. Who knows how many other thousands of people are assisting on this matter.
You guys just want BP to be screaming at the top of their lungs that they are sorry for this mess, and they have already said MANY TIMES that they are, but it isn't enough for you. You want to say that the governments response is inadequate, however, what do you suggest they do? They already have sent their best resources to assist in the matter. Kick BP out? The guys who's bread and butter is drilling and pumping these holes?
The government doesn't have any super secret special powers guys. They can't use their telekinesis to make this stop. They are doing what they CAN do.
