World leaders have been using their religion to influence their decisions since the dawn of time, Bush is no different. Its not for me to say where his true feelings lie, but I think if he was really that religious he'd be more peaceful and giving than he really is. I think the fact that he's increased the amount of religious imagery in his speeches is an attempt to appeal to religious conservatives and give his actions an air of legitimacy. Some people will actually believe that God tells Bush what decisions to make.

I question the religious piety of anyone who actively seeks a position of secular power.

I tend to agree with you that bush is using it to sway certain crowds. My question is this is he better off with adding they extra religous zelots to his campaign? While loosing those that may have already been on the fence?

I think he is better off playing to that crowd. He needs to ensure that he gets the vote for those people for whom religion is very important. As for people that don't place any importance on religion, he'll lose some, but most won't be offended enough not to vote for him if they would have anyway.
