Well we can certainly agree to disagree on this.

There are some interesting studies you might want to look into regarding different prison systems throughout the world and how they run.

I would encourage you to seek them out and peruse them, if you have a genuine interest on how the system could be improved.

I would suggest to you, that your inmates are a product of their current environment, as we all are products of our current environment, and behaviors do definately change with environment.

Thanks.

P.S. I thought my background was highly humurous!

Smile, be happy.

Unfortuantely the only way to totally wipe out prison rape is to put everyone in solitary confinement, which would be cruel and unusual punishment I am told.

That be said it is an epidemic in prisons and really needs to be dealt with.

That and get rid of the dirty guards who let it happen..

Because you know they are in on some of it, otherwise the % would be lower.

Japan prison's are different and considered much harsher than ours. There all prisoners start with no rights and live in relative confinement eating bland rice soup three times a day. No books, music, no anything but cell and like 45 mins per day to exercise.

If they earn merit points then life improves, and to earn those points they must follow all the rules such as standing ready by their cell door, fully cleaned and dressed with bed made, at 5 o’clock in the morning. Then it is no talking or any communication other than to the guards all day long. After some time they get more privileges, but one fight and they will find themselves back at day one.

A 5 year sentence is considered a very harsh one in Japan due to the nature of the prisons, and I remember there was a huge uproar when they fed some American prisoners turkey on thanksgiving since it was so far out of their normal process, but hey no one gets raped.

No one serving time at such a facility, really wants to be shipped to a warehouse type facility, so they do in fact control themselves, solve their arguments peaceably, don’t rape one another, or any thing else that might constitute an infraction that would have them transferred to a more restrictive, more crowded, and less pleasant place.

You are talking about a setup where white collar/nonviolent/non drug criminals can end up. We had a rather big one on Eglin AFB. There is a huge amount of grass that needed tending and that is what they did. I’m sure a prison in CA or NY would be much worst.

Also, there is a difference between a jail and prison. I have heard some horror stories with jails too.

Just eliminate the prisons. Brutalizing people is not a way to rehabilitate them. If society feels the need to brutalize someone, it should just kill them and be honest about it. It's cheaper, more humane, and eliminates the problem of what to do with someone whose reputation has been ruined forever.

Actually many violent and drug offenders end up in such places at the tail end of their sentences to start preparing them for release back into society.

The Federal Government has about a dozen prison camps similiar to the one at Eglin including in California, and upstate New York.

Depending on what trade skills an inmate has, they can be assigned to work at a lot more than cutting grass.

There is how ever no truth to the rumor that Federal Inmates control and coordinate the Navy's Blue Angel Squadron.
