BP told feds it could handle oil spill 60 times larger than Deepwater Horizon

blog.al.com

In its 2009 exploration plan for the Deepwater Horizon well, BP PLC states that the company could handle a spill involving as much as 12.6 million gallons of oil per day, a number 60 times higher than its current estimate of the ongoing Gulf disaster.

In associated documents filed with the U.S. Minerals Management Service, the company says that it would be able to skim 17.6 million gallons of oil a day from the Gulf in the event of a spill.

Obviously they can't. Did they even try to prove how they'd be able to contain a spill 60 times larger than the one in the Gulf today? What they're doing to fix the problem today wasn't even in their original plan. Obviously the government should continue to trust what big corporations say.

So the conclusion could be:

#1) BP lied in telling the gov't that and the gov't didn't do their own checking. Shocking, I'm sure.

#2) The oil gusher is much larger than 60x what we've been told.

Or BP actually thought they could do it, government didn't ask for evidence and trusted them.

Wow, there's that magic number. Big Banking said they could handle 60 times the leverage and destroyed the economy, Big Oil said they could handle 60 times the spill size and destroyed the ecology. That only leaves Big Government to fail epically and destroy something else starting with the letter E. Oh crap... the planet.

The govt wants no part of this, its in a no win situation. Because its such a public disaster they can't hide it so they have to be seen to be talking tough to BP but thats were the outrage of the politicians ends. Privately if BP told Obama to fly out to the gulf and get a straw and start sucking, he would.

In reality BP will just blame and fire a few old execs, get a slap on the wrists fine and then carry on doing whatever the hell they want to the enviroment.

I don't really expect them to have factored in the 5000 feet either when they made that statement

That's was my first guess, but if you're drilling that deep you should probably factor that in...

The thing is, they did not know how they would handle such a situation, because it never happened before.

So, they were believed.

Let's hope they are not let off the hook for this, since, they lied. But then again, suckers are borne every day, based on the lies of snake oil salesmen!
