Iraq says it uncovered al-Qaida plot on World Cup

South Africa is going to be on edge, I believe.

There were promises from terrorist factions that there will be blood during the world cup. Coupled with the recent killings of al-Qaida higher-ups, things could prove dire indeed.

This seems to cement the possibility, however South Africa remains in the dark on the subject.

I was supposed to be going but circumstances have prevented it....thankfully.

The more I think about it the more I realise that the risks are just too many and varied.

I think it's fair to say that terrorists of all persuasions would like to target the tournament and there are enough domestic problems in South Africa that make me think any visit is just far too dangerous.

Some friends are finacially committed to going, I think they are getting more and more nervous.

However, if England get to the final I can't promise not getting a flight out there, we'll see.

I'm glad the only sports I watch (MMA) are still small enough to not be the target of terrorists, or the cause of massive riots

And on a related note, Shane Carwin is the future of the heavyweight division!

Iraq uncovered it? Sounds like something is fishy there by that statement alone. No offense to the OP. Iraq can't even function fully yet and now they are uncovering terrorists plots now? Let me guess...Al Qaeda right.

Yawn

I remember that Al Qaeda was going to blow up the Vancouver Olympics.

Now it's the World Cup?

I tell you , I would buy a Al Qaeda poster if they actually Blew Up the

set of Dancing with the Stars.

Heck, that wouldn't even be terrorism , it would be more like a

Public Service.

If something happens during the world cup I think the national teams are the most obvious target...remember Munich 1972?

Peace

In all honesty what would be the outcome of an attack on the World Cup? unlike other events quite of number of the teams fans do not have the reputation of being nice and cuddly..

The backlash would certainly kick things up a notch (or 10).. and if it was a Western team that was attacked instead of defending their teams fans would be defending football itself..

I really am not sure if AQ would be that silly IMHO..

No offense at all, brother.

I was saying I thought it odd that S. Africa wasn't told anything of this...which does increase it's "huh?" factor.

I hope all goes well there with this World Cup and i'm pretty sure we'll get to the final (not England but the actual Final) to see the games out. On the other hand i reckon London's Olympics is the next big target of any terrorist group.
