If the tube works, it would be the first time the company has been able to capture any of the oil before it fouls the Gulf waters.
Researchers from the National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology, meanwhile, say they have detected large oil plumes from just beneath the surface of the sea to more than 4,000 feet deep.
Three or four large plumes have been found, at least one that is 10 miles long and a mile wide, said Samantha Joye, a marine science professor at the University of Georgia.
Most DHS research money
does go toward detection of chemical, biological, and nuclear threats, and the high-risk budget is just 1 percent of the whole. But Cohen has been an advocate of new technologies. As for hurricane modification, scientists say research itself can reap benefits. "Even if we can't change their direction," says Golden, "we may develop better ways to predict where storms will make landfall."

As open as I am to conspiracy theories I think insuating that this was purposely done is a little too out there even for me. You have to remember the powers that be have villas, enclaves, yacts, ranches, retreats what have you ALL OVER THE WORLD. The oceans are their playgrounds. They want to be able to enjoy pristine beaches and fresh seafood as much as the next person. I hardly doubt they would wantonly destroy the entire gulf of mexico. That makes zero sense and there are many other ways to destroy and gut the American economy. In fact they were doing a great job before this happened. Not everything is a conspiracy.......this was just complete incompetence and a disregard for safety and precautionary measures.
From the subcontractor who reportedly modified the BOP without the knowledge or permission of BP, to the government regulators who okayed the modified BOP, to the Obama administration who wants to look tough on BP even thought the company had no culpability, everyone but BP is running for cover. Internal records show that Cameron built the BOP and delivered it to Transocean. Before the BOP was put into service, it was reportedly altered by Transocean with no modification approval or notes. The BOP was then installed, and the modifications are assumed to have prevented the part from operating properly. These modifications were discovered by remote operated vehicles, whose pictures transmitted to engineers trying to establish why the BPO didn't activate, showed the part had been altered. Yesterday, top BP executives met with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and the U.S. Coast Guard and told them about the tampered BOP and the fact that BP had no knowledge the device had been altered.
Stupak said congressional investigators also have learned that the emergency controls on the blowout preventer "may have failed."
A representative of Transocean, owner of the drill rig, told the committee that any modification of the blowout preventer would have been done at BP's request. So far, there has been no response from BP on the allegation.
[Updated at 11:03 a.m.: In Tuesday's Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing, Lamar McKay, president and chairman of BP America, said: "We do have reason to believe that it was modified. I don't know the extent of those modifications."]

what the hell for??? it hasn't been done on purpose, they could have made more money by selling the oil not draining it into the sea

Have to thank you for putting it all together. A window of opportunity was created, it will be exploited. Chain reaction to occur. Not prophecy, just observation.

Sony Ericsson Says RFID will be in all new mobiles by 2010
It’s a two-way, bio-directional RFID communication link that makes this device work as a tag or as a reader.”
Mobile phones could also soon become instruments of fraud detection. Djuphammar said credit card companies could make use of mobile user location data and IP mapping to ascertain whether a credit card transaction is taking place in the vicinity of the official card holder and thus judge whether that transaction is likely to be genuine or not
BP has four direct links to Bilderberg: former CEO John Brown, chairman Carl Henric Svanberg, chief executive Tony Hayward and Sutherland. In addition, Sutherland formerly served as the World Trade Organization’s director general, EU commissioner and chairman of the European Trilateral Commission.
This background information is important because the top recipient of BP donations during the 2008 presidential campaign was Obama. Similarly, the second highest political action committee contributing to a political candidate in 2008 was Goldman Sachs. The beneficiary of their largess: Obama.

Barack Obama sends nuclear experts to tackle BP's Gulf of Mexico oil leak
The US has sent a team of nuclear physicists to help BP plug the "catastrophic" flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico from its leaking Deepwater Horizon well, as the Obama administration becomes frustrated with the oil giant's inability to control the situation.
The five scientists visited BP's main crisis centre in Houston earlier this week, along with Mr Chu, and are to continue to work with the company's scientists and external advisers to reach an answer.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Mr Hayward said the five-hour meeting involved a "very deep dive" into the situation at hand, with "lots of nuclear physicists and all sorts of people coming up with some quite good ideas actually."
Pressed further about the meeting, he said they had "come up with one good idea" but declined to elaborate.
The five include 82-year-old Richard Garwin, who designed the first hydrogen bomb, and Tom Hunter, head of the US Department of Energy's Sandia National Labs.
In addition, Mr Chu has already despatched Marcia McNutt, the head of the US Geological Service, to the oil company.

BP has resisted entreaties from scientists that they be allowed to use sophisticated instruments at the ocean floor that would give a far more accurate picture of how much oil is really gushing from the well.
“The answer is no to that,” a BP spokesman, Tom Mueller, said on Saturday. “We’re not going to take any extra efforts now to calculate flow there at this point. It’s not relevant to the response effort, and it might even detract from the response effort.”
