Lars should be commended for doing what most of us want to do but don't have the b**ls to do. If muslims are going to get upset and violent because of the depiction of mohammed then it is time for these muslims to go back to islamic states where the way of life they enjoy is abundant. In the western world our liberties and freedoms should not be compromised for them. For those who say well you should not poke fun of mohammed because you know the muslims will get mad and take action against you, i say too bad, if they really feel they need to use violence to defend the prophet they will be punished for it, and hopefully sent away.

you're the one who needs to grow up and realise that the world doesnt revolve around you.

get over it, the muslims will never allow anyone to make fun of their prophet. i know this, you know this, and even jesus christ himself knows this. they made it clear.

look at it from this point of view, what good comes out of mocking the muslim prophet? freedom of speech has nothing to do with it, NOTHING.

so what good comes out of it? what do these people gain? does it satisfy them when they mock other faiths?

bunch of losers, and the muslims are no better but what can you do. you cant convince millions of muslims to be more understanding.

I see. We should allow muslims to behave like murderous brutes because they become offended, and according to you, anybody who offends muslims and gets murdered for it "deserves it".

In other words, according to you, the death penalty is perfectly acceptable for drawing a cartoon.

You, sir, are an enemy to humanity and to freedom. I have zero respect for cowards such as yourself.

Why were Muslims even at the Lecture?

This is a breach of Security in itself... surely if the man is hated so much by the muslim community, you wouldn't have allowed such people in to his Lecture

And when did this invasion of Sweden start anyhow?

Man... we really do have problems in Europe now....

Another example of religion continuing to impede the progress of humanity. Free speech is much more sacred than your gods.

Trying to understand western satire may only confuse them further it would seem. It may help them to understand that even in the west the recipients of such satire may also consider it blasphemy, that is when a well liked figure of any kind is taken down a notch using cartoon hyperbole, yet we embraced its use for grand part it plays in our tradition. Again though they will be confused trying to understand our need to try to keep things down to earth by mocking and ridiculing hypocrisy, pretension, illusions of grandeur and how we arrive at truth or reinforce ideas by doing so.

Having said that these cartoons have played thier part in the outbreak of violence in the west over the centuries. There are certainly no bouderies here in taste or form, truth or propaganda. Yours.

Ignorance of the culture in which you reside is unacceptable. Certainly, when westerners find themselves in other cultures, compliance with the standards of that culture is mandatory. In some cultures, infractions can be fatal. There shall be no double standards: when arab/islamic individuals take residence or vacation in western cultures, understanding and respect of their traditions and lifestyles must be honored. They must understand and respect freedom of speech when in our culture just as westerners must understand the suppression and prosecution of unislamic ideas and actions when in those cultures.

When you deal with animals you eventually might get bit. Lars is lucky he only got nipped. Hopefully, he doesn't end up like the movie maker, he payed the ultimate price.

Some people have gone too far. I'm referring to the insensitive cartoonists like Lars Vilks.

They'll get the same reaction or worse if it's on Buddhist, Hindu or Christian.

Well, we have more than a few cases in the last few centuries, when muslims get large enough in any culture they forget how to play well with others. Just look what they do to each other. This is not likely to change.

Yeah right.. what planet are you living on? I could be pissing on a buddha statue while ramming a dildo into a Jesus doll outside a church... they wouldn't do squat. Anyone cared about Buddha snorting coke on South Park? Jesus surfing porn?

steynian.files.wordpress.com...

They didn't care the first time.. why now?

Bowing down to their ridiculous demands is appeasing terrorism.

People like Lars and Van Gogh are paving the way, ConspiracyPianist said it best, censorship only leads to stagnation.

Cultural understanding and respect is likely to change those trends. I have many muslim friends here in the U.S. that absolutely do not react in an ape-like manner to someone's cartoon.

They were there because it was a public lecture, thus anyone could attend. It wouldn't be a free country otherwise. The people who behaved violently clearly don't respect that liberty.

As for the "invasion", the problem we have in Sweden isn't the amount of immigrants, it's the fact that if anyone complains or does anything to offend muslims, that person is immediately labelled a racist. Muslims physically attacking someone who does not share their worldview is a-okay however.

Seth Mcfarlane has really taken some cheep shots on Jesus over the years on his Family Guy....show...or whatever one could call that mess. Not much of an outcry over it.

I'm no "pro-Islam" person or anything (I'm not in favour of any of the major organized religions) but this Lars guy; he can have it.

He doesn't want it any other way. He loves the publicity he gets for his crappy excuse for art.

Still, I'd like to compare his wreckless ways with what it's like to work as a bouncer (which I've been doing from time to time the last 7 years):

You're doing a great job at the door. Treating everyone equal; fair and just.
No problems at all. If you get into trouble, even the guests will be happy to help you.

Then this new collegue shows up. He thinks he's "Mr. Bigshot" since he is in the spotlight.
He likes to treat people differently, just because he can.

One night, he ticks off the wrong guy and his gang. You are not there at the moment, thus unable to cool the situation.

The next night, your stupid collegue is off duty...but that gang from last night comes back...and spray the entrance with their AK's...

There you lay on the ground, bleeding out...wondering what the hell just happened...

Just the same with that crack-pot Lars.
He gives this country an unwanted and undeserved threat from crazy people.
While we were trying to treat everyone nicely, staying out of trouble...this idiot just has to throw some stones at that hornet's nest...
Real mature...

There are at least a million better ways to use the freedom of speech.

No respect

You have no idea how right you are.

A few years back, there was this photo exhibit called "Ecce Homo" by famous Swedish artist Elisabeth Ohlsson-Wallin, picturing Jesus and the apostles as gay...

There was not only massive critisism from the church(-es), but the exhibit was also attacked and vandalized at several occations.

Even though no Christian institution (of larger magnitude) put a price on her head, she recieved great number of death-threats from...? Well, not from atheists anyhow

[edit to add:]

Another example of fundamentalist Christians acting "ape-like" like someone said earlier:

What I am trying to do is say that all kinds of religious behaviour without any healthy distance to itself is just...sad.

As for the content of the video, well, is there really anything to be shocked about? Vilks knew what he was getting into when he started down this road. At the same time, he's done the world a great service by bringing to light the uncivilized behavior of even "westernized" Muslims.

Racism....

What do actions like this accomplish other than radicalizing sane populations against yourself?
And no, Vilks has no defense. He knew what he was doing, he'll get what he knew was coming to him. You can't poke a viper and cry when it bites you.
[edit on 11-5-2010 by D.E.M.]

So what you appear to be saying is that no one should express anything against any group that has threatened actions as a consequence?
Is this your interpretation of free speech? Is that your interpretation of being able to have an opinion, even a controversial one and being free to exercise it?

Well, in your viper analogy, if you poke a viper and it bites you, you kill it. You kill any vipers around it, heck you might even choose to exterminate the vipers...hard to say, but I digress.

It doesn't matter if this guys cartoons suck, it doesn't matter if it offends people. The Muslims going to the lecture, they knew who this guy was going in. That makes their assault on him criminal. I cannot believe people will still allow these fanatics to dictate what YOU may do in YOUR country. (or other 'free' country)

Lastly Muslim(s) are (is) not a RACE. Idiot..is not a race, and these Muslims..are idiots. Absolutely no excuse for this kind of behavior. You don't like it, don't look. I saw one guy/moron even brought his kid, in the video he's got the "power fist" raised. Yup..quality parenting there...

..Ex

So. I'm from Sweden, and you know, at first, I thought, hey, Lars Vilks will have to suit himself. He knew the reaction this would bring. But, you know, more than that, I feel that those idiots deserved it. Just as I hope they all get thrown in jail for the rest of their lives. (Which of course won't happen.)

Because if there's anything I can't stand, it's idiots like them. Religious fanatics ready to beat somebody for the sake of a long dead old fart - for the sake of a belief. Not just that, though, because there's worse things caused by this than a bruise to a rebellious and/or moronic comic artist.

Idiocy like the dumbass behavior of those people reflect badly on ALL foreigners in Sweden, and will, ultimately, only cause more racistic tendencies in a country where there is already too much of it. That's a #load we do not need in Sweden, no matter how pissed off they get at a dude for drawing Mohammed.

So... If I had been there...yeah, there's a large likelihood I would have been in jail today for aggrevated assault. Because I can't stand people like them.

You need to grow the hell up. The world isn't as tolerant a place as you want it to be. People will make fun of your religion. Get over it, and stop making yourself the victims. Because guess what - you are NOT the victims when you gang up on and assault a comic artist for a stupid drawing.

//Angry rant over. Sorry about that, y'all.

It is obvious that these people who choose to physically attack someone because they don't like what they have to say about some historical figure have decided that they will not respect the laws of the host nation, and so they should be deported to a nation willing to take someone who seeks to willingly premeditate murdering someone. This deportation should be with the knowledge that should they ever return, they will be locked up in prison for the rest of their lives.

Or just lock them up for the rest of their lives.

The same should go for anyone who issues death threats.

Nations who support these death threats should be considered our enemies, and we should not trade with them, or allow immigrants from those nations. Their leaders should be treated as international criminals, and arrested should they ever leave the borders of their nation for supporting actions of issuing death threats to our citizens that should be treated as acts of war.

These Muslims who think they have the right to trample all over my right to freedom of speech are doing more than insulting my belief in the right of free speech, but trying to physically force their will against my beliefs.

So it is like they are insulting my dead mom.

I'll bet there are plenty of others who feel just like me.

I don't think so. I was watching a music video yesterday of a guy rapping inside of a Christian church. He was using various obscenities while comparing himself to Jesus Christ. Many people were offended by the video but most found it hilarious which it was.
