Since Australia began as a Penal colony just how many of those do you think were christian?
This was pretty much it.
It was not so much offense, as much as putting it straight. As mentioned the earliest of my ancestors to come here was "transported" to use the
language of the time, and was Catholic. It has stayed that way with my family until current generations.
For about a century and a half my family never intermarried. They stayed within a very hardcore Irish Catholic bloodline until my parents generation
when my uncle married an Indian lady.
My wife is English/Scottish which if my grandfather were still alive would get his goat no end.
All I meant with the reference to loons was that almost exclusively the convicts sent here were of what we would consider a very petty nature. As such
it differentiates them from "godless" thieves.
Anyway the ancestors that were transported of mine were devout Catholics, and as far as I know many were. In that case Australia's white settlers
were christian in nature and as you read not everyone coming here at that stage were convicts. Alot were soldiers for whom I cannot speak for their
religion but with the trends of England at the time it is fairly safe to assume they were protestant.
Cheers,
Pablo
