Yes Australia started as a penal colony but mainly it was an excuse for Britain to get rid of the poor. But todays Australia is mainly built on Imagration and we account for the majority, My parents came here in 1961.I personally do not know one australian that is a decendant of the initial penal settlements, so I;m guessing the percentage is very low now.

Australia is also one of the most multicultural countries on Earth and I think our population for the most part has intergrated very well.

As for our Aborigines, the Gov pumps billions into them but as is always the case it's the few at the top that get all the money while the ones in need suffer, corruption is everywhere,

Why is this not moved to HOAX section?

The OP is very misleading... Because it was a hoax.

LOL, nice to know you.
As a side note I find it wierd that you Australians call us POMs and yet POM is short for "Prisoner of Her Majesty" of which you are a decendant, not me

Like me do you find Australians live harmony considering the multicultural base? I actually find the westerners here (UK included) are more adabtable than say a lot of Asian or Jews who tend to group in the same areas and thus nau assimilate as well.

First I too am descended from the original arrivals.

Secondly POM I was taught stands for prisoner of the motherland. The thinking goes that while in England things like the house of Lords existed we had abolished all but diplomatic ties to the motherland. On yet another aside WOG stands for welcome overseas gentleman. Quite ironic really. Though that last is hotly debated sometimes.

By your pies reference it seems you have at least assimilated the minimum as far as I am concerned.

I think if more immigrants got into Aussie footy it could and would break down a few barriers.

Virgom 129 , If you don't like it in Australia I think you are welcome to leave .In your case POM stands for prisoners own mind ! Time will tell if I am talking crap as you say .To a arrogant juvenile with a attitude like yours I don't feel compelled to prove anything .I will back up what I say for others in time . What I know would be to much for a ATS thread . It is a very long story and it is mine to do what I please with . It is a story that spans many centuries and no matter how it is condensed it would not fit in a forum such as this .That's one hell of a chip on your shoulder you have there friend and on a closing note why does your Queen wear the Danish Order of the Elephant ? Your Queen accepts and wears it because she is a lower ranking and subservant Monarch .As a matter of fact replying to a trash mouth like yourself is beneath me .For others in Australia my claim more than likely sounds very odd and out of no where , and I respect that .How ever it is so odd and new it just maybe something .Strange thing to make out of nothing don't you think ? Agree or disagree there is no reason to lower your self to virgoms level .

I never said they were loons and no doubt many of them were in debtor's prison. The exact composition of the first settlers (how many were convicted of what crime) might never be known.

Thank you Pablo, that was really a good article.
Just what did I say that you disagreed with?

Since Australia began as a Penal colony just how many of those do you think were christian?

This was pretty much it.

It was not so much offense, as much as putting it straight. As mentioned the earliest of my ancestors to come here was "transported" to use the language of the time, and was Catholic. It has stayed that way with my family until current generations.

For about a century and a half my family never intermarried. They stayed within a very hardcore Irish Catholic bloodline until my parents generation when my uncle married an Indian lady.

My wife is English/Scottish which if my grandfather were still alive would get his goat no end.

All I meant with the reference to loons was that almost exclusively the convicts sent here were of what we would consider a very petty nature. As such it differentiates them from "godless" thieves.

Anyway the ancestors that were transported of mine were devout Catholics, and as far as I know many were. In that case Australia's white settlers were christian in nature and as you read not everyone coming here at that stage were convicts. Alot were soldiers for whom I cannot speak for their religion but with the trends of England at the time it is fairly safe to assume they were protestant.

Cheers,
Pablo

Thank you for sharing the personal info and for clarifying the nature of the criminal offenses that they were sent to Australia for. I guess they didn't trust the violent ones enough to allow them to participate in the colonization experiment, something I was not aware of. I just figured it was the "usual suspects"

Not so as I now see. I meant no offense to your ancestors either, mine were hillbillies from the southern so I still hear about how "bad" my ancestors were everytime a thread pops up about the civil war or slavery.
cheers mate
