I know most U.S. based survival forums are full of threads about all the firearms we have for when TSHTF. Since ATS has a lot of people from around the world I was wondering what those of you who live in not so gun friendly country's will use to defend yourself and family.

I'm thinking people will get real creative real fast if need be, garden tools, cricket bats, sharp pointy sticks.

150 pounds draw weight crossbow is my favourite, can fire it lying down, can make 'bolts' for it (correct name for the short arrows it fires). I also have a military sabre, short machete, knives. toxic smoke grenades are easy to make.

How about throwing CFL lightbulbs?!

Just kidding. (Sort of!)

Slingshot. Light, quiet. Great for small game and ammo is just lying around anywhere.

Remember seeing some fitted for use with arrows.

Slingshot, small knife, machete and an oak club (mace if you prefer..i.e. medieval mace, not the spray...lol)....you can kill ANYTHING you want with the above and alittle thought.

crossbows are choice if you ask me. i have a 85 pound pistol crossbow, they are really cheap, it was like 25 bucks. kill a person or animal easily, the pistols are pretty accurate but the 150 pound kind like the other guy was talking about are REALLY REALLY accurate.

other than that i keep a paintball gun with frozen paintballs (amongst other modified rounds). got 2 stun guns, and some decent knives.

i always wanted one of those klingon swords from startrek

Must be really old considering paintballs are oil based nowadays so people can't freeze them.

If I didn't live in the US, I'd probably have a lottt of swords, knives, etc... But if TSHTF, people would get creative really fast. At least the ones who want to survive.

Honestly, you don't need a complicated weapon if you have a good brain. While I'd rather be able to shoot you from 100s of yards away, if I need to, I could always hide around a corner, in a tree, whatever. Once you walk past, I smack you in the head with a big stick, slit your throat, and go hide somewhere else. If martial law were declared or something, it would be armies vs individuals, and there would be no sense in thinking you are the terminator and you can just stand there blasting SWAT teams away with your Mossberg 500 or something.

Stealth and quick thinking would be more useful than a cannon.

Compound and recurve bows are sold here in Aus,good weapon for hunting, cross bows here are illegal.
Spears are easily made from sticks.
An old timber base ball bat makes a good mace, hammer a heap of nails into it half way and cut the nail heads off!

the really cheap paintballs still freeze, like the ones that come with the gun in "starter packs" at walmart.

altho you are correct most other balls do not freeze, in which case you buy jaw breakers or jumbo gobstoppers (the individualy wrapped jawbreakers and "atomic bombs" are just a hair bigger than a paintball and require soaking off the first layer of color).

but i assure you the green balls that come with the guns in any of the walmart markers freeze. i believe the brand is "Stryker". dunno if its the same everywhere else.

another round that worked well but takes some time to make is, cut open the paintball and empty the paint, then cut each half of the shell apart with a razor blade, and fill each half with chewing gum. then let the gum get hard, and super glue the 2 halves together.

you can easily mold the gum to the shape of each paintball-half. and it doesnt work as well with the cheaper guns that dont have a velocity adjustment.

if you have money, theres a company that makes paintballs filled with red pepper powder called "Deter-it", similar to the stuff in pepper spray.

Depends on the situation and environment for me.
A Bow,Slingshot,Side Arm and Knife.
Three quiet choices and one last resort.
In any situation whether it be hunting or "SHTF",the more noise you make the more attention you will draw.

In making any purchase we all look for common denominators to make comparisons, eventually leading to a decision. In the good old days this worked great! Chase down a couple of dinosaurs, bop the slow one, and let the quick one run while you drag your choice back to the cave. Easy!

Selecting The Right Crossbow

Selecting a bow is a very personal choice, and while one skilled bowhunter will pick one bow, another may purchase a bow entirely different. There are many different bows on the market and virtually endless accessories to go right along with them. Picking the right bow for you will be like picking the right pair of hunting boots: quality, fit, durability, and ease of use all come into play.

An idiotic weapon made famous in movies.

I know you are looking for flame thrower, but anyone who uses it as such is as good as dead.

1. A range of maybe a foot.

2. Takes both hands.

3. More likely to blind yourself then burn anyone.

4. Nobody is stupid enough to come within your range. A good size stick is all your opponent needs.

Stop getting your ideas from movies.

It makes a light flame too....really won't hurt all that much...(and, you risk blowback, and blowing up the can, if you don't do it right)...

A nice hunting bow would be my favorite choice (silent, accurate, good range, easy to find or make ammo)...

A good machete is a handy melee weapon.

In Africa they hunt big game with spears. I suppose if it weren't effective, they would have stopped doing it.

If you had a bat. you could always practice your swing during MLB season.
