The military does not trust Obama in the least, and I don't blame them. He is no friend of our military. Rest assured, that we have many more than the publicized number.

Makes perfect sense. I mean how long has it been since the Cuban Missile Crisis? Decades! That's long enough to create thousands of WMDs. I'm not surprised by the numbers, though it seems like in the 80's we were in a pissing contest with Russia to see who could out-nuke-produce the other.

Many posters here fail to realize that the number of warheads that the United States possess is not for the general public to know much less our enemies.

The number of nuclear weapons we possess has been a closely guarded secret since August 1945 when we told Japan that Tokyo was the third target after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan surrendered because they came to their senses and we bluffed our enemy into surrender knowing we didn't have any more nukes at the moment.

What has happened here in the Obama administration is nothing short of high treason and should be punishable by death. I don't care what your title is or how high up you are in the government. There seriously needs to be a congressional investigation here. This is just more wrong than anything that can be imagined.

Also, it's probably very likely that the number quoted only refers to assembled, operational warheads.

How many warheads do you think the USA could slap together over a short period of time, given the parts and fissionable material on hand?

It's just a stupid PR stunt to feign a policy of "openness" and "transparency", when the reality is that the Obama administration is no different than any other administration.

Our nuclear weapon / strategic deterrence policy has remained mostly unchanged for more than 40 years, and it isn't about to change much any time soon.

Umm what bloody difference does it make who knows how many of those thousands of warheads you have?

You could have a tiny fraction of that, say.... 100 warheads?... and it would still be 100 to many and it would still be sufficient deterrent to your 'enemies'.

If two men have two guns pointed at each others heads, they only need 1 bullet each to make each other pause for thought.

Also... its not like they've given them pin point directions on where to find them

You should subtract the land mass of the US.

Would be a more accurate number due to the fact that we will probably never use our own nukes on ourselves.

I'm sure if the US reduced it's nuclear stockpile down to 500, it could still destroy every major population centre of the world and save a lot of tax money that could be reinvested in to the economy to help in these economically tough times?

Or would the shady figures in the Pentagon laugh at this idea of not having enough overkill?

Define major population center. There are about 270 cities just in the United States with a population over 100,000. There's no telling how many strategically important targets such as bases, silos, command centers, radar installations, etc, that there are, either.

This number doesnt mean anything. The US has SO much weapons grade material stored (heck they even store it for other countries) that if we wanted to we could build tens of thousands of these in a VERY short time.

Heck even Japan is considered an "undeclared" nuclear power only because they havent built the bomb, but they have EVERYTHING in place to build MANY in super short notice. Its not how many bombs you have...its how many you can make and how quickly.

That's a lot of boom boom. I've been told that a single missile sub can destroy the world a couple times over, so seriously what is the point in having 5,113 nuclear warheads. As for it being treason to tell the world how many nukes we got. Lets be realistic. If there was 10 nukes total in the entire world, and we admitted we had 8 of them. Then that's treason. Telling the world we got thousand and could destroy the world hundreds of times over... well they already new that.

Hate to rain on peoples parade, but the 5113 is the number of weapons that are active and can be fired off.
What people should be asking is how are the safe guarding the 26112 deactivated and dismantled weapons in the US arsenal.
You see, the problem with nuclear grade material is once it is refined that pure, it can only be used as a weapon, it can not be used for anything peaceful. And unfortunately none of us will live that long before the material is inert and safe. So the ultimate question is what is the US government doing with that much weapons grade material and how secure are the places that it is being secure, and what part of the country is it in. (Places to be very wary and not go if things keep going badly.)

That's why Obama's recent military moves are simply infuriating. He is clearly acting out on the destroy America mandate given him by his radical communist handlers and mentors, Frank Marshall Davis, Alinsky, Tom Hayden, William Ayers and a few others.

One of his Marxist appointees revealed the basic premise behind Obama health care. bankrupt America, create social unrest and implement a communist takeover.

Or in reality that Project Thor has come to realisation. Nuclear weapons are no longer needed when you have space based Kinetic Weapons.

That the USA has weaponised space to a level they are comfortable with.

No it's not that. Rather its the fact that most of the dictatorships in the world would not hesitate for a but a moment prior to a full scale launch, if they knew they could obtain a decisive victory over the US.

So with the nuke count, if you had all your sub hunters in place and you had your satellite kills worked out and your targeting of ground launch silos worked out, you could do a simple head count and figure out whether all the US nukes were accounted for.

All we can hope for now is that some sane US generals are lying to Obama about our true capabilities. It actually makes the world a far less stable place. There is a reason Israel only hints at their capabilities. That uncertaintly keeps the stone cold hearted muslim fanatics from launching an attack.

Except you can get on Wikipedia and figure that number too. Now your theory depends on someone somehow gaining a distinct advantage over 5000 plus nukes.
