What about drive a:

OVERSIZED STEEL RING
MANDREL

into the hole as a "top kill" technique.

your thoughts?

Hey! I should have read your entire thread. Last night after I took a good looks at the graphic diagrams for their Top Kill mission, and got an idea of the innards of the BOP, rare earth magnets also snapped into my mind. I posted in the solutions thread I started. The idea to modify the piping coming out of the manifold they sent down there and have a probe tube that goes down into the BOP and then sends in REM's separated by teflon spheres, to keep them from sticking together in transit.

Another added the idea to stick a very large high power magnet on the outside of the BOP to help the 'junk' inside it stick.

The other key ideas that came up was to feed in and twist up metal wire to help clog it, and another was to send in epoxy paste.

But I'm curious if you already sent them your idea for magnets?

Their engineers should already be so witting.

Yeah the magnet thing snapped into my mind as well, something that is flexible and something that can stick like a magnet. The comparison that I thought of, that's when it hit me. They should also tie down some metal wire mesh around the pipe so when they blow the shredded crap in there. Not as much crap will get blown back out.

Seems to me that before any cleanup effort can even begin we have to stop the leak. I am not going to read through this whole thread, but I thought I would throw a potential solution out there just for the sake of doing so. BP should attach a HUGE BAG onto the wellhead to capture the oil until a permanent solution can be implemented. The big bag would act as a bladder that could be periodically emptied. I am just saying the most important issue we have is the oil that is trashing the ocean. Every day this goes on, the worst it becomes. We need to capture this oil the is polluting everything until a long term solution is implemented.

The government is worthless! People need to just start doing it themselves. All the farmers in the area that have extra hay and straw need to just start taking down to the docks and the fishermen start taking it out and sopping up the oil. Also all the marshes they are so worried about just start putting hay and straw in there and sopping up the oil.

Someone should set up a website and start recruiting people to ship thier hay down there and people with boats etc. to take out and soak up oil with it. At least if it washes up on the beach it will be easy to pick up just like sea weed.

If we want this cleaned up we the people are going to have to do it and by-pass the incompetent worthless government. If I lived anywhere near the area I would load up a pick up and trailer with hay and head for those marshes and just start doing it and maybe get some news outlets to cover it and start the ball rolling and hope it caught on.

Ok so anyone live near there want to get the ball rolling?

OPs suggestion about the T pipe was about the best I could come up with at first. (You'd think Band-Aid would have something
)

I love the magnet suggestion. They could spray magnetized powder into the hole and/or simply use 3 high-powered magnets on the outside of the pipe... or put a coil around it... then spray metal fillings in.. then harden it somehow... I don't know, but I really think you're onto something.

I guess cinching the pipe would just cause it to explode?

What about spinning nano-thread around the pipe then outward over the gap into a tip... or even right back onto the original pipe. A mesh insert might be needed to act as a frame..

They could weld rings or slabs around it, inching outwards and curving inwards to fix the pipe..

As for what's already left the pipe, I Googled "best way to clean up oil". (Genius, I know!)

Oil Gone Easy looks good.

I see the trouble their having trying to seal the leak with all that pressure
jetting out. They need to insert an inflatible diaphram a little ways down inside the hole.
That will slow the flow of pressure enough to where they could then mud
and cement it shut. I'm pretty sure they could think of that though.
Well maybe not. Ok it's a toss up.

That's a good idea, randy... like an inflatable reinforced balloon or bag. It could be slipped in along the side and then inflated.

I think it's clear TPTB wanted this to happen and want it to continue. We're not going to get down there to be able to use a real simple working solution... It's BS.

Just another card in the game.

Why don't just the tankers collect the oil?

it's really hard to imagine that bp, as well as the us government, have made the choice to drill into the seabed with a lack of a fail safe in case of an accident like this. i find it difficult to believe that the scientists associated with deep water drilling didn't warn of the potential life altering consequences an accident like this could inflict. drill, baby, drill.

I posted this in a few posts, thinking maybe someone somewhere will read it. reinforced quick setting cement might be the answer!!! get a pipe to go down tier into the hole, pump reinforced cement into it, dries quick, bring the pipe up to next level fill, ect.till a piled mound of cement is left ontop of the oil hole*
thats my new insight*

I posted an idea that went unnoticed in another thread...

What if they started sucking the oil out of the well head using the same lines that they used to pump the mud in? I don't know if this is possible, because I don't know the configuration of the BOP and if these lines are able to "suck and blow", so to speak. I also don't know how much these lines can handle in terms of volume.

Maybe someone with some expertise can confirm or debunk this method?

Even if this measure isn't enough to stop the leak, perhaps it can reduce the pressure of the oil escaping out of the top of the well head enough to seal it using another method that was impossible due to the massive PSI of the oil and gas escaping the well head.

When I watched the failure in my minds eye I posted this on 3-5-2010 @ 11:34 AM

The OP of this ATS thread is saying the pressure was 70,000psi...

Waterjet Cutters operate at 40,000 psi offsite cite LINK

This is why a 2nd hole must be drilled.... a 2nd hole would cut the pressure in half...and perhaps divert much of it while valves that could withstand the incredible pressures are installed... if they exist at all.. perhaps with valve faces covered with saphire or diamonds..

And re the clean up itself... if you gave me the money and said go fix this.. I would collect the largest collection of the largest centrifugal oil separators onto barges... and start vaccuming up the oil as fast as it comes to the surface... edit - or rather as fast as I could run my pumps between overhauls...

The trouble is... the energy used would be huge and perhaps more than the recovered oil... and I know there are centrifugal oil separators made, I dont know how big they can be made, whether they exist right now... and/or how long to fabricate them..

Or how long such pumps would last trying to pump that gritty oily mess...

I'm with you on this idea. This was the first thing that came to mind. It seems like a legit idea. Simple and effective.

Yes I do, get every BP S****HEAD EXEC Especially the obese MFERS and shoot them and stuff thier cold dead bodies in the pipe!!!!

I wonder if there is anyway they could get a huge pump of some sort, to pump molten steel down the relief well. I dontknow if this wouldwork, or if it would combust, but molten steel being pumped into the pipe would harden almost immediately I would believe, but maybe I am wrong.
I dont know, just trying to keep the discussion going.

I was also wondering if there is a way to get a "bigger" pressure relief system. Im sure if we got rid of most of the pressure underneath(if possible at all without causing oil to come up through the relief wells) that maybe oil will stop pumping out of the existing broken sleeve, giving us just enough time to cap it off and installing something more permanent.
But I guess if there are ruptures already in the casing and oil is comming up from different parts of the seafloor, that this may not work/or could it?
Would that relief be enough toalso take therelief off them as well?
I mean, isnt that our biggest fight right now with this, the pressure?

Just thinking out loud.

yes it has messed up our thermohaline system and drastic measures are to follow, the system was already waining but the oil spill may have pushed it over the edge, in particular the gulf stream,
