Stating we're in the clear was in the context of how this topic, and your post was worded. The title states "Mother of all Gushers could Kill all Earth's Oceans. I stand by my statement, we're in the clear here.

Well again the the key word here is "could" not would. And still my point is that we don't know the full repercussions and the size of this oil deposit. A large part of the oxygen for earth comes from the ocean from if I remember correctly I believe algae ( some one correct me if I am wrong.)

Lets say with the gulf stream and other ocean currents it kills of a large portion of the oxygen production of the ocean even if it does not kill all the fish etc. and still we do not know what other repercussions all this might cause.

We just can't afford to assume we are in the clear based on math alone. I generally agree with you that it is unlikely to kill off the oceans and you have made a great case for that. However even your case is based on assumptions just like the article, as I said we don't know the size of the deposit and the possibility for repercussions and chain reactions. We have to quit brushing this stuff off too easily as even if this one doesn't do what might be possible what about the next one?

I don't think using explosives would be a wise move,as theres a shed load of natural escaping, the whole lot could blow.

God knows how to fix it.

The article in the OP said that the rig had landed on top of the hole, but other articles say the rig landed 400meters away.

Which is correct?

Scientists say dolphins should be treated as non-human persons

Scientists studying dolphin behavior have suggested they could be the most intelligent creatures on Earth after humans, saying the size of their brains in relation to body size is larger than that of our closest relatives, the chimpanzees, and their behaviors suggest complex intelligence. One scientist said they should therefore be treated as "non-human persons" and granted rights as individuals.

Sorry dolphins, your only right left is to die.

I wonder what these intelligent creatures really think of humans.

I f articles I've read about oil rig, pressure, pipes, holes are right, guess what ? The US are going to use a nuke to cover the mistake ! Maybe they will reveal some exotic technologies from outer space to work arround 5000 feet under and 30000 feet under the earth...

Nuke the world, nuke the sea, nuke everything...

I hope this doesn't become the defining human-error catastrophy of our time. I fear it will though.

In a way interesting to get all the facts on it. Star and flag for this thread. Something like this belongs on the front page for everyone to see and share.

LMAO!! Ahh, that made me laugh. Maybe locusts with human heads are going to pop out of the oil deposit?

Really though, bp needs to start the cleanup to the point of bankrupt, I don't care, make hundreds of vessels designed to skim the surface of the water.

That would be the worst thing to do-If they nuke it,but fail to plug the leak, they won't be able to do anything as the area will be radioactive.

Lets hope they do not nuke it.

Just a light coating of oil so filmy you cannot see it can kill many aqueacious species....especially in their younger smaller stages of growth...
Who knows what other toxic materials are comming out of the pipe with the crude oil....?
I assume there will be impurities along with the oil.....
What if the krill and such very tiny but prolific food sources for fish etc...the mcroscopic life which supports the larger lifeforms by feeding smaller prey...die off?
the potential for a third of the fish in the sea being killed off is there allright...
Is this rig named "wormwood' by any chance ?heheheh
The immense damage this can, and eventually will, cause,
is going to take several decades to clean up regardless of what they do to stop it, and will become the greatest manmade disaster in short order at the rate it is spewing out toxic crude into the sea....
Neuclear waste may be the next magnitude down....

I'm thinking this was intentional, designed to poison earths water, and bring about Spill-a-geddon.

Think about, what is more valuable than oil. Water. If all the worlds water is polluted, and you own the only reserves, then you have all the power.

How to pollute the planets water? All the waterways are connected, so the poison could branch out from one spot, like the Gulf.

Self Replicating Nanomites will be deployed to clean up the oil. Only problem is, with and endless food source, the nanomites get out of control and pollute earths water.

Sounds far fetched, but what doesn't these days.

343 trillion gallons of oil would need to spill to make all the oceans toxic.

I think we're in the clear here.

Isn't that assuming that we need as much volume of oil as we have water in the oceans. Life would probably perish in large numbers with only a fraction of that amount. Who knows what the repercussions of that would be.

The latest article I read stated that the plan of attack is to temporarily place a "dome" over top of the well head to contain the oil...It's going to have to be one hell of a dome to contain 30-40,000psi

Since Dolphins are so freaking smart, wouldnt they be smart enough to swim away from the oil in an organised fashion?

For those of you who follow the web bot predictions and who read data set analysis #14...I am afraid that this is the prediction that they were talking about that changed the ocean currents.

I think this is the "global coastal event" that the web bots predicted over a year ago.

All i can say is this mostly one to keep your eye on.I wonder how long will it be before they evacuate the gulf coast because of eco reasons.a mass relocation of more folks
