I cannot believe that, in the second half of the twentieth century, anyone in the west, apart from Dr Strangelove, seriously wanted war with the USSR.

They might have wished the entire population of the USSR succumbed to bubonic plague but that is a different matter.

How do you engage a power like the USSR, liberally supplied with icbm's and nuclear warheads, against which you have no defence , and hope to win ? Did the soviets not test a 10 megaton device ?

Well, you'll have to excuse me then, as I'm basing my arguments on my actually being born during the cold war and seeing all the propaganda flyign around with my own eyes.

The Japanese launched a sneak attack against the US so as a result we became paranoid and were eyeing the Soviets closely as being the next possible boogeyman plotting to stab us in the back. Conversely, the Nazis launched a surprise attack against Russia so the Russians became paranoid and were eyeing the US as being the next possible boogeyman plotting to stab them in the back. They were conjuring up just as much paranoid sounding propaganda about how we were out to get them as we were making accusing them of being out to get us.

The whole reason for there not being any war isn't due to some secret gov't plot failing to kick off world war III, the frightful economic cost of the arms buildup, nuclear genocide, or even the peace protestors. There was never any war becuase neither side was truly a boogeyman plotting to stab the other side in the back.

Obviously there was no false flag attack to spark a war with Russia, the only reason however, because it merely didn't happen. If you look at the propaganda machine being run by these individuals however, you realize that their goals and ambitions, almost down to the exact wording, mirrors the exact policy actions that got us into war with Iraq.

No it does not. Not in the least. There never was any evidence for any supposed non-acoustic antisubmarine warfare system, but there definitely WAS proof from boththe Iran-Iraq war and the gassing of the Kurds that Saddam Hussein had nerve gas and would gleefully use it. I keep mentioning this to the conspiracy people, and what's their standard response? turn it into yet another secret conspiracy and say "Yeah, but Reagan sold them the nerve gas".

There is ONE connection between the cold war, Iraq, and 9/11- these conspiracy people are of a mind to pervert everything they touch into sounding like some secret gov't plot to murder us all. Of course.

The soviets actually tested a 50 megaton "tsar bomba" in 1961.

The fireball was 8km in diameter and there was blast damage 1000km away. It marked an uncompromising - and rather unexpected - end to the period of nuclear thaw under Khrushchev.
