"I couldnt help but - when you stop to think that were all Gods children, wherever we live in the world, I couldnt help but say to him (Gorbachev) just how easy his task and mine might be if suddenly there was a threat to this world from some other species from another planet outside in the universe. Wed forget all the little local differences that we have between our countries and we would find out once and for all that we really are all human beings here on this Earth together. Well I guess we can wait for some alien race to come down and threaten us, but I think that between us we can bring about that realization."
Ronald Reagan, On December 4, 1985, at Fallston High School, Harford County, Maryland

" In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity. Perhaps we need some outside, universal threat to make us recognize this common bond. I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside of this world. And yet I ask - is not an alien force already among us? "
Ronald Reagan, Forty-second general assembly of the United Nations, September 21, 1987

I have a co-worker who swears that Reagan also brought up the issue of ETs before a group of Chicago bankers once in the 80s... only that he went on about the subject for about three minutes (the speech was not being recorded and was closed to the public). There's also a legend that Reagan cried during the screening of 'ET:The extraterrestrial' at the White House and hinted to Spielberg that something like that portrayed onscreen might be true.

If anyone has any other Reagan/ET qoutes could you post them here?

BTW, Reagan was a UFO witness.

Do you have any links supporting these two claims?

While looking for more quotes, I ran across this site:
www.presidentialufo.com...
www.presidentialufo.com...

The article on his UN address makes it clear that he PERSONALLY INSERTED the part about the ETs into it.

Look no offense but i think this is just a speech to get the people to support the fall of the U.S.S.R. He was just saying if there was something threatening us from outer space then we would all unite.

spng...

The site I just linked to also covers that Spielberg story, though I wasn't linking because of that. I read about that White House screening in a UFO book years ago. I didn't mean to sound like I was saying that the conversation DID happen, for sure... I was just bringing it up to round out the initial thread.

I suggest that everyone reads the story on that site about Reagan's stop to Roswell while campaigning for someone. While in front of the old hanger that is rumored to have housed the crashed Roswell craft, Reagan apparently made several (jesting) comments about ETs. Though this might just be because of the presence of the Apollo astronaut (as I assume it is)... I find it funny to see comments like that in front of a location that is the focal point of UFO history.

Presidents, in general, make an effort of trying not to say something that can be considered spacey or weird. Look at how -- even when discussing things like space exploration or plans to go to Mars -- Presidents avoid even mentioning that life might exist elsewhere.

So, why do we have a President who repeatedly makes the same basic comments about hypothetical ETs in a variety of situations, in front of a variety of groups? Do you really think that a group of bankers from Chicago need to be convinced that the Soviet union is bad? Why do we have him personally stenciling the comment into speeches OVER the heads of his writers? Surely there are a multitude of ways to just talk about the Soviets... ways that wouldn't open him up to insults?

Most importantly, most iterations of the 'speech' emphasize the idea that we would cooperate with the USSR in the event of an alien threat. It doesn't make sense to point out that you can cooperate with an adversary for the sake of a common goal if you're just making a point about how bad he is.

I don't think the point of the speeches were to paint the Russians as evil or whatnot. Raegan was friends with Gorbachev, and worked to end the cold war. I think he was saying "There is no need for conflict. We are more similar than we realize. If there was some kind of outside threat, we might realize our similarities in having to band together to fight it."

He was oddly obsessed with alien invasion.

Yeah, I'm not trying to argue that this is 'proof' of ET contact...

...I'm just saying that these are pretty unusual things for a president to talk about... repeatedly.

I do think that there's enough evidence to point to the notion that Reagan was, indeed, very much interested in the ET question. I imagine that this is mostly because of his California sighting, but he was also known to have had a 'mythic' view of the world. As he had been employed as a man who created images for people, I can see how he would sense the storytelling potential of the ET issue.

Yup. He'll be missed. And as for the UFO statements.. well, he was just trying to end a conflict that was becoming a pain in his backside.

Mr President, we salute you!!

Those comments could have been laying the groundwork in peoples minds for the government to fake it and bring the world together as he says it would...

can you say New World Order?

Maybe Reagan was able to convince Gorby of an alien threat and it played more of a role to ending the Soviet Union than we'll ever know? It could have been a genuine concern that helped lead to this or as Faceless said, it could have been an attempt to fool everyone into a "New World Order."

If we had a Pres. who could show other world leaders evidence that would convince them we had something to worry about, these leaders might then admit to some of the flaws in their governments and change or take a backseat role to a country that they saw as more powerful and able to lead in a fight against aliens.

I think what I said previously might still be a possibilty for the future.

Reagan started the Star Wars program because of the UFO threat. Little did he know that his idea would be abused by other nations.

Don't know how true this is but, I like this one where after Reagan saw a private screening of Spielberg's ET he took the director aside after and the President told him "You know, there aren't six people on this room who know just how true that really is."

I've heard the ET quote from Reagan multiple times so I believe he probably did say that. He and his wife were also very big into astrology, so whether or not he had proof of aliens is questionable, but I'm fairly convinced that he believed in the existence. Too bad he didn't blow the lid when he had the chance.

Here are some extra links regarding Reagan and his UFO interest:

Besides his sighting with nancy while driving to a dinner party, Reagan also claimed that, years later, he was flying in a private plane when he spotted a UFO near the aircraft. The pilot chased it for a brief period.

A quick question: The Reagans were half an hour late to the dinner party in question... and Reagan saw what he described as a 'UFO' later on. It's been observed that some abductees have multiple sightings in their lives... and are often 'late' for things. Might it be that..........?

Faceless: This might be a tad off-topic, but I think it relates. You said that you thought that Reagan did that to bring the world into a One World Order; well, isn't it just possible that because that failed, the Sept 11th thing succeeded in pissing America and the rest of the world off enough to band together against a common foe? Just a thought...

onlyinmydreams: Sure, he could have been abducted. But I could also be the direct descendant of the Oscar Meyer Weiner too for all I know.

I don't mean to offend, but the whole abduction thing seems a bit off to me. Maybe I'm not skeptical enough, I dunno. All I DO know is that no alien wants me on their ship. I'd steal it.
