In Australia we have numerous 'subway sandwich stores".
In these stores there are all manner of condiments, vegetables ect to place in your roll to complement the beef, pork ect that some like to eat.
BUt ask for beetroot to be added and you are stared at and you almost sense a button under the counter being pressed.
I was explained to by the franchisee owner of a particular outlet that he as an Aussie had questioned the abscence of beetroot, and was told it was not an American staple so was not to be offered.
Similarly try going to a greek fish and chip shop asking for a hamburger with lettuce onions and beetroot and they will blanch.
I was told by a take away outlet run by greeks in Melbourne that I was the first ever person in fifteen years to ask for beetroot in their burger.
Mcdonalds only a few yeras ago relented and allowed beetroot to be sold in the "Aussie Burger" what do other ethnic groups other than the Brits and Aussies have against beetroot?

The rest of the world just calls them beets, you don't call carrots roots because they grow underground, do you ?

I'm actually eating beets right now in a beef stew. Canada calling.

Are you referring to thinly sliced pickled beets ?
If you are, I have some in the fridge and enjoy them all the time, as in make my own.

I don't eat food from fast food restaurants so the condiment selection is an unknown to me, but I'm almost 50 and have eaten them all my life.

I have nothing to add, except:

Hooray for pickled beetroot on toast!

Yes thinly sliced mm picled beets I guess, they are called sliced beetroot in the Anglo nations,"I have eaten whole beets but they are not like the delicious sliced canned beetroot in Australia, "Do you really grow your own?
Perhaps you could make a million introducing the non beetroot eating Americans to its intrinsic goodness?
Beetroot is brilliant as a salad dish contributor and goes well with all meats and Fish.
But it really shines as Iam sure you know as a sandwich , roll filler.
Unlike the tomato it does not dominate the flavour of a sandwich or roll.
Thank you very much for your reply (Do they sell thinly sliced beetroot in the USA?) or were you forced to grow your own?
Do you put sugar in your own creation?

As just beets you can always find them in American salad bars. They are somewhat popular pickled, but they are popular like anchovies. They have a die hard following but are ignored or derided by everyone else. Beets are universally disliked by everyone on both sides of my family, but I have more than a few friends who are quite fond of them. Though I can never get them to put the fish on the pizza

Great to see , Americans have heard and tasted sliced beetroot in a can.
Pity the franchise master in the USA wont allow SUBWAY IN AUSTRALIA to give its customers the option of having BEETROOT on their sandwiches/rolls.
Perhaps they have their very own special reason.
The Perfect Aussie Hamburger
one real non seasoned beef patty made out of Aussie beef
Fresh Lettuce
Mid cooked onions
BEETROOT(sliced from the can)
Two big buns slighly toasted (not too crisp but not too soft)
A dollop of tomato or BBq sauce if preferred (or black pepper. )
Tomato freaks can add tomato slices as well, but it unfairly dominates
perhaps the burgers overall taste?
Open up a cold can of beer and ENJOY.
