Gardner to die by firing squad on June 18

www.sltrib.com

A state judge on Friday signed a warrant ordering that Ronnie Lee Gardner be put to death on June 18, setting the stage for Utah's first execution in more than a decade.

The condemned man chose firing squad over lethal injection as the way he will die. Department of Corrections officials will choose the time of the execution, which will take place at the Utah State Prison in Draper.

I thought this would be something that people here at ATS would like to discuss.
What I'd like to know are your thoughts on this. Should we be doing something like this in our modern society?
Isn't this like old west kinda stuff?
I didn't know we could do this to people.
Not saying he doesn't deserve to pay for his crime, I'm just in awe that a state can still do this.

Are you kidding? He's lucky he has the choice between those two. If they left it up to me on how to kill this guy, I'd start by putting him on a draw and quarter machine. And crank it up just to the point of maximum pain, and leave it there for a few weeks. Once I was done partying my ass off over the fact that this murderer was having to suffer seriously, then I'd take a red hot iron and stick it up a few places where the sun don't shine. But I suppose that eventually I'd show some compassion and let the draw and quarter machine complete its task. But I'd still laugh my ass off watching his legs and arms come flying off.

Yeah, that's what needs to happen to murderers.
No sympathy. None.

Well he has the choice between the injection and the firing squad - If I had that choice I think I would have to go with the firing squad also, there is a little too much doubt in my mind about how 'humane' the lethal jab is.

Two wrongs dont make a right, not to condone what this Man did, your suggestions on dealing with him offer little hope for our species. People are not born Monsters, they are made by the society around them. He is still somebody's child.

The whole thing is obscene, and its not civilized, nor should those who do not wish to live in hell be subject to the group insanity and violence running like programs in the collective mind, that endorses state sanctioned murder or violence of any kind.

You can't be against something, to retaliate in like kind.

Its long overdue for people to wake up to who they are inside, to explore their Higher Selves, what unconditional love and compassion mean, what endorsing evil psyhco world leaders who manipulate all the violence you and your children are enduring, exposed to, or succumbing too, all their nets, means, and what opting out from this insanity means.

So how would you punish a murderer?

This is no Utopia. Welcome to the real world.

Anyways . . .

I would have chosen firing squad, myself.

The real measure of civilization in any society can be found in the way it treats its most unfortunate citizens - its prisoners

This is one of the reasons why America is failing in all aspects of a civilisation measured throughout its history. A really good measure of a civilsation is its social policies and the way it tries to address crime before it happens and not deal with it after it happens.
a good example of this is child molesters. How does one become one?.....

I'm from the UK. I actually have no idea who this guy is.

When I read the thread titile, I did not expect this to be in the United States.

I'm very surprised.

Torture is the work of very dark forces. You can't do the things you are saying you would do, without the screams of pain and begging sticking to your soul. I hope you are just blowing off steam for your sake.

The execution is done by the state, and God will take care of the rest. We are not the vengeance: "Vengeance is mine saith the Lord."

I hope this helps you.

"An eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth"...

This man has killed, and so he should be killed. There should be a zero-tolerance policy in effect for all murders committed in the United States of America. Anyone who commits a murder will be sentenced to death. I am willing to bet that murder rates will go way, way down.

I damn well could do it, because I am one of the very few left who actually gives a damn first about the victim, the attorney, who got shot and had to die a horrible death, full of pain because some jerkoff decided to end his life. He has a family too, along with a mother.

But of course that doesn't matter, now does it? All sympathy to the murderer by God, and none for the fricken victim. You people make me sick, and no wonder this planet is doomed.

Man I don't think some of you know what the heck you are talking about. The guy is on Death Row, which means 23 hours a day in a cell with nobody to talk to or outside contact. That kind of life will drive all sane individuals to have severe mental problems. To me the death penalty is way more humane than literally throwing a person in a 8x6 cell and throwing away the key.

So all these people thinking that the death penalty is barbaric, think about this for a second.

8x6 cell 23 hours a day, no outside contact, no TV, a limited selection of books, for the rest of your life. If you want to see what I mean lock yourself in the bathroom for a week 23 hours a day and tell me how "humane" that is.

"Easier said than done."

No one deserves to die... It goes both ways for the victim and the criminal

So we let the killer free?
We put them in jail and pay for them to live?

NOTHING is a right. Get that? If life is a right, tell that to the innocently murdered humans and the victims of Hiroshima/Nagasaki for example.

A right is a law. A law can only become social acceptance.

My friends pranked my car a bit ago. I did a prank to theirs that left them crying.

My point? You hit first, be prepared to be hit back three times as hard.

No TrueAmerican, it is you and your like that make the World doomed, your idea of justice is akin to something from he dark ages, red hot pokers and what not?!

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

No one on this thread is saying this mans deeds are good, but your opinion is the work of an uneducated and barbaric mind. You miss the point, you only serve to highlight society's failings.

The man will die, by firing squad, fair enough. But your call for torture is little more than ignorance and a failure for a species to look at its own deep rooted problems.

At least one sane guy here

Can't believe all the other people who think that a criminal, a murder shouldn't be killed.
I'm all for the death penalty, it cleans society from human garbage.

Capital punishment is vengeance, not justice...

So those who favor it should at least bring some honesty to the table and admit it is indeed vengeance...

At least that way a rational debate from both sides can take place...

Denying capital punishment is vengeance and nothing more is like believing in a flat earth...

Again you fail to digest what is being said, Death penalty, maybe. Torture after 20 years in prison and red hot pokers?

Hard to believe this is the year 2010

Looks like we really are all doomed

If you kill someone we kill you back.

What better deterrent is there?

IMO I think he got off easy. A life sentence in solitary would be much more fitting IMO.

There are things worse than death.
