Ok, here's the lowdown. 75% of the time I'm on ATS I'm on my iPhone (like now). It's incredibly annoying, Safari freezes, it 'checkerboards' while scrolling in order to wait for the page cache to refresh. But this is what i'm forced to do since my parents recently implemented a policy to limit my computer time in their NWO scheme (that was a joke btw).

A few days after the iPad came out, I went to the apple store to check it out, still being on the fence. I WAS BLOWN AWAY! The screen was crisp and clear and ATS loaded fast and smoothly. When web browsing at home, I feel like it could replace a laptop for most things like reading sites like ATS. I was expecting it to be hard to read, but I found holding it in front of me (or probably on my lap) gave me a similiar (albeit a tad smaller) than my 15" laptop.

I didn't get one because i'm waiting for the 3g version, but I definitely recommend you atleast check it out. If any of you have questions about the ipad, ask and I'll answer the best I can.

Oh I hear ya! My friend has one and let me play around with it and of course I visited my favorite site! I can view ats on my iphone but it's too small. I will be anxiously awaiting my iPad in the mail

just the sort of pretentious word I would expect from an apple user.
'Perfecto' agghhhhh

I believe every work place should have an Iroom. This is like the smokers lounges at airports. Any Idiscussions should take place in this room to spare the rest of us. It should also be totally blacked out to the outside world.

Those days were gone years ago, for those that don't need companies telling them what to buy.

thanks for posting this video!

Now I've finally decided, I am definitely getting myself one of these to read and brows ATS from the bed or sofa.

I never like to buy the 1st generation of these stuff though! and I probably wait until we can get the 3G model for a good price here in Europe.

Or if similar ones are coming with linux?

But for the first time in a very long time, I now feel the urgent need to buy something like this.

At the very least, this WILL be my Christmas gift to myself this year!

Aaarghh! I can't wait until Autumn/Fall or Christmas to get one! I'm more giddy than a young love-struck teenaged schoolgirl or like a kid on Christmas - to have one right NOW!

I visit, and post very often, on my G1 phone .. even though its now an obsolete piece of technology.. I view ATS as I would on my Laptop or my Desktop. The only time I have problems on the G1 (now called Android I believe) is that whenever ATS puts a "wrapper" on top of the page, I have problems clicking on the links, and will sometimes delete my posts when I hit reply. The "wrapper" being like those eyes that were at the top of the page, or whenever Johnny Anonymous would post a new show.

An Ipad is a blown up Iphone ..... nothing more. So instead of going out and buying a gigantic phone for an obscene price... ill stick with my (now obsolete) G1.

PS: I've been able to do exactly what you describe for over a year and a half now Hunka

Oh this is where you are soooo wrong. An iPad is not simply a bigger iPhone... Look at the posts above which show the difference between reading ats on the iPhone and reading it on an iPad... 180 degrees difference....

Wifi is faster.... Theres a full qwerty keyboard..... I could keep going....

I continue to perform all computer based interactions through it and I've never been happier or more productive. Thats another thing.... For someone as ADD as me... It really allows me to be more productive than the laptop... And then there is the issue of it's weight.... I could never sit with a laptop on my lap for longer than 5 minutes.... Now I can spend an entire day with. An ipad on my lap....

It's so not just a bigger iPhone...

Now words are pretentious?

I don't understand your level of hatred for others technolust... But to each his own i suppose.

my internet (that I pay for or I can use wifi) is fast enough, rarely have problems with it unless im outside the 3g service zone.

It also has a full keyboard.

Still seems like a bigger Iphone. And if there are slight differences, not worth the obscene price.

oh my god, it is getting ridiculous we already have a COMPUTER to get on the internet, a laptop, a phone, and all other kinds of gadgets that just numb our minds, the internet is a great tool, but people keep trying to keep up with the Jones's and buying more and more electronics that promise to be better then ever and really you are just throwing your money away!! do people really think it makes themselves look better by throwing their money??? why don't you save your money??? and don't feed me that crap "oh its smaller then a laptop so more convenient" stop being a deuchbag and be happy with yourself and you wont need so many mind numbing life sucking electronics!!

Actually I see this as a victory of the collective unconscious... I've been wanting something that wasn't a normal computer to interface with the Internet on a more visceral level... Now folks like me, a programmer for 28 years, live on the Internet and am ecstatic to see the technical evolution of the mind/Internet interaction.

Given the popularity of the iPhone and resulting Apple mobile platform, a "big iPhone" is no small matter (uh... no pun intended
).

Lots of people are dismissing it as nothing more than "a big iPhone," but then, that's exactly why I wanted it. I like much of what the iPhone did, but didn't care to also have a phone on a mobile Internet device, but wanted a bigger screen. And here it is.

Even looks like a bigger Iphone! lol .. I'm anti-new-technology lately.. I bought my high tech, super new yadda yadda G1 the month it came out. Not 5 months later there was a G2. Then the Android Series. I have not even gotten to my 2 year contract end date lol.

Or my TV that I bought last year, which I can go back to best buy and get a bigger, thinner, higher quality picture for a lower price now.

Just seems like if you're going to spend so much money on a "new" piece of technology, there should be at least a good chance it will last a few months and not be obsolete by a bigger better more efficient machine that makes yours look so last week.

Sorry I couldn't resist this with the talk going on. Apple is supposed to make a mini I pad. I got the names to. It will be called the mini pad and the one out now will be the maxi pad. Sorry the pun is bad but needed.

I really like the concept/layout, and I spend so much time reading through websites that part of my soul is probably floating around out there on the internet somewhere.

What I'm not so fond of is how restrictive the ipad seems to be in terms of usability atm. I'm sure it wont be long before other products come along that will allow a user to choose the OS of their choice, with more capabilities.

Seeing the reading glasses in SO's pic also made me wonder how much use I'd actually get out of one on a daily basis without getting a sore nose-bridge. Ah well, we'll see what the future holds I guess.

In the mean-time I'll just have to suffer the up-coming media extravaganza from the couch.

OT: Did you see that manicure? Bill coulda' been a hand model for J.C. Penny!

As a programmer for the last 18 years (professionally), I think it's always a good idea to know what the computer industry can offer, so I find it strange that you think this is something new.

If you look here you can see the point of view of one computer maker, and you can see that wireless networking on a pen-driven device is something from the XXth century.

Let's get this straight... Were not talking about hardware here.... And the ipad isn't pen driven.

Or at least im not... Im talking about the fusion of hardware, design, art, and integration that is the iPad... I could not do the stuff im doing right now on my ipad on these other things.... This isn't a tablet... I never wanted a tablet.... This is my new interface to everything Internet....

And it's much more than simply another tablet piece of hardware...

It's the same as being pen driven, while my PocketPC was working I rarely used the pen, I used my fingers.

Who cares about art? That looks too much like marketing speech to me, I'm out of here.

Marketing speech?

That would be like me saying you are cynical for comparing the iPad to tablets of years passed.

It is art to me because I don't have to deal with any low level components linking my subjective world to the cyberjective universe.

Since acquiring my iPad I have become amazingly more productive. I can flow straight from a meditative trance induced by my choice video, to banging out an email to my sons teacher, then vncing into my iMac and using the iPad to control it for its purposes, again vncing into my Mac book pro to do something there, and then back to typing this post, all without beachballs, hourglasses, or other context switching speed bumps and all while I sit cross legged on back deck of my house listening to the evening chatter of nature, without any heat or real weight resting on my leg.

To me... That is art, not marketing speech.
