The Unschooling Movement

I came across this article that I found very interesting for today and tomorrow's children.

We've all been taught (and probably didn't have a choice) that we had to go to school. Of course college was always an option but not required.

I believe, and I'm sure many of you ATS'ers would agree with me that the school system is corrupt and just a way to brainwash us into believing what TPTB want us to believe. It begins when we are young and our innocent spongelike minds absorb corruption and lies.

For many of us we never truly learned what we wanted to learn.

For instance I have always been fascinated with astrology...that subject would be laughed at by the education system since its not "practical" knowlege...

Anyways, I really hope that as people wake up and take control of their own lives that this trend will take root and people will begin to realize they have a choice.

Wow that's interesting...

I think that in order for things to change for the positive we have to let children have the reigns to their own destiny without the influence of our leaders...otherwise nothing will ever change and they will continue to be programmed just like everyone else....The time to make a change is now!

I hate the idea of learning being institutionalized, but institutionalized learning is the only option we have to educate a large mass of the populace, so they can develop basic skills needed to survive in society. The redundancy and amount of unneeded subjects truly destroy the motivation of our youth to work hard at their dream, and often these "unneeded" subjects does not correlate with their interest and goals, which often cause them to lack even more motivation to work proficiently, which consequent the question of "why do I need this?" and "why should I do this?"

Learning is effective when the subjects correlate with the student goals and interests.

The school I attend now and have attended barely taught me anything, and I've relied on forums to increase my learning. I've pretty much learned on my own accord.

Ah, yes...let's stop sending are kids to school. This way they have more time to play video games..hmmm...I do agree that the way we teach our children needs to change and yes, I also feel that their should be more options for what students can learn in school. However, when the US is all ready getting its rear kicked in education by countries like, China."Unschooling" will do nothing to help this country grow, especially in areas like math and science. I constanly hear people complain that they are angry that immigrants and foreigners are taking "their jobs", whether its a min. wage job or a job requiring a PHD. I love living in the US and would never want to live anywhere else. I just feel like that we can be quite lazy, plus in most in states at about the age of 16/17 a student can decide to drop out of school. Than their free to do whatever they want. My point being, that Yes schools today haven't been doing the greates job and do need much help, but let kids run around and do whatever they want isn't going to help anyone.

Just goes to show that not all teachers are always right. Listen to your kids when they say something about their teachers. Best way for kids to learn, is for you as parents to teach them.

Metal detectors, officers, drugs, gangs, violence. Your average inner city school. American public schools in general are a complete waste of time.

Well said. Asia's education standards are much higher. Education is taken seriously. Students have great work ethic. They don't waste their time with BS subjects like art, music and psychology.
