BREAKING: 6.9 Magnitude Quake rocks China

(CNN) -- A rapid series of strong earthquakes hit a mountainous and impoverished area of China's Qinghai province early Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

At least 67 people were killed, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported, citing the China Earthquake Administration.

Many others, including primary schoolchildren, were feared buried under debris after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck at 7:49 a.m. local time (7:49 p.m. ET Tuesday), when many people were probably still at home and schools were beginning the day.

The USGS also recorded three strong aftershocks -- of magnitudes 5.8, 5.2 and 5.3 -- all within two hours of the first quake.

"We have to mainly rely on our hands to clear away the debris as we have no large excavating machines," police officer Shi Huajie told Xinhua. "We have no medical equipment, either."

Man, is this the worst Quake season, ever?!

I know people keep posting data that shows 'nothing out of the ordinary', supposedly, but damn... sure seems I'm seeing a LOT more 6+ monsters than ever before.

Although, this article doesn't say it, my iPhone [initial] alert says 800 dead, 3,000 injured.

Man.

yeah, CNN tends to be a lot slower than ATS. CNN had the article up quite a while ago, but it only just recently became "breaking" news.

Wow this one was nearly 50km deep.

Much deeper that most we've seen... and still a high death toll/damage...

400 killed and thousands injured in the region according to the BBC this morning.
The problem in China is that they "build" their homes in Underground makeshift caves, which not only collapse even in modest quakes, but are prone to liquification due to the sandstone rock.

Any time there's a quake in Central China (even a 7.0) you can sadly expect casualties in the hundreds/thousands.
