What is your 'how to make it in America' list?

Here is mines. Pretty typical to start off this topic, so let me hear from you.

Get born. For becoming a U.S. citizen.

Go to school. For education.

Say no to drugs. For health.

Stay clear of thugs. For less of the risk of getting mugged or killed.

Stay out of gangs. For less of the risk of going to jail or getting injured or killed

Get a job. For earning a living.

Get a driver's license. For getting into places easy and to drive.

Buy an automobile. For transportation and shelter from the weather when going out.

Buy a house. For shelter and for a place to bathe or shower safely away from strangers.

Buy a firearm. For self-protection.

Kids should be taught this simple chain of events in school.

But you forgot one, "either use a condom, or be careful what people you lay with, as to protect yourself from the MANY nasty things you can acquire these days."

I always tell people, it is truly impossible to fail in this country if you just work hard, and live an honest life. Aside from freak accidents, or jealous psycho wives....

Easier said than done.
My generation in so-cal got pretty much screwed when it comes to buying things like this. Sure we can buy used cars and rent a place to live but a young person today cannot really quallify to buy a new house or car unless they have the cash.

I had a rough start. If I could only go back and give my earlier self some pointers.

First you are going to have to get a job. A decent one. When I was younger I power-washed decks. Pay was crazy. 20% of every job. Banked 1100.00 a week. Rent a room or a basement. Much cheaper than an apartment. Buy a mediocre car. Nothing flashy point A to point B. ATTEND community college if not attending a university. Less partying. (noticed how I typed less?) Keep your credit score. Live beneath your means.

Also don't wonder where all this stuff comes from anyway?

Don't ask questions. Don't wonder why you lose the bill of rights in your workplace -- freedom of association, freedom of speech, due process, etc.

51% of your income tax? You don't wanna know. Just pay it.
