China's Great Firewall Spreads Overseas

www.cio.com

IDG News Service — A networking error has caused computers in Chile and the U.S. to come under the control of the Great Firewall of China, redirecting Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube users to Chinese servers.

Security experts are not sure exactly how this happened, but it appears that at least one ISP recently began fetching high-level DNS (domain name server) information from what's known as a root DNS server, based in China. That server, operated out of China by Swedish service provider Netnod, returned DNS information intended for Chinese users, effectively spreading China's network

Is this the Cyber War that the Pentagon has been gearing up for.

Seems suspiciously predesigned to me.

People, are we going to be censored by the Chinese?

Perhaps the US government outsourced their censoreship?

I mean, EVERYTHING is made in China. Communism is quietly sneaking into America, through the backdoor.

I dont believe chinas firewall has any thing to do with communism. I would say it has more to do with police state and control. China is more fascist than they are communist imo but thats a seperate debate. I could see any nation wanting to control internet using this.

Nah, I doubt its as drastic as that

More likely someone simply stuffed up an entry when a zone file was edited caused the problem...Trust me, its very easy to do, speaking from experience

Not only that, but China also hold American Bonds going back over 20 years....they could in fact seize American assets to repay the loans, and under Commercial Law they are entitled to do so. America is already occupied by illegal Mexican people, these people are quickly becoming a majority of the population in the Western States first, but spreading to other States too. The government, in their vast wisdom, is trying to gain support for Full Amnesty...this would effectively do two things. first, most would vote Democrat, and most are Catholic. Figure that one out. Secondly, this many, coupled with the millions more that the legals would bring in, entire families would be eligible. This would bust the Health Care Plan, if the original American people don't bust it anyway. I just cannot see the funding here. Obama says he will tax the rich, but what is to stop them from moving to another, tax free country? GWB already owns property in South America, some 140,000 acres, I'm told. Where is the vast amounts of money coming from?

You should get a job with the "security experts", as they seem to have no explanation.

WOW! Sure glad that you aren't in charge of Root DNS Servers.

You have two edits on a simple five line post.

Root Admins DON'T Make errors like that or they are sent cubical cleaning.

Think before you put everyone into your mediocrity and poor performance.

Malevolence could certainly have played a role.

I can come up with many ways that could have occurred and none of them is accidental.

And I KNOW you've never had to edit an ATS post for spelling, grammar or understanding...I just know it...Just another mouthy Yank demonstrating why most of the rest of the world hates America and Americans...Next please !!

Where did I say I was a root admin ? Root admins aren't the only people who edit zone files, bozo...Besides, its not really difficult to fix an error 5 minutes after you've made it....Its easy for desk jockeys like you to make comment on stuff you know nothing about apart from a five line post by someone you dont know, eh Skippy ?

Oh yeah, its gotta be really a case of malevolence...

Now, find that tin hat and get back to watching X-Files, please ?

Seems it's the same to me all in all...

I think it really needs to be stressed that the Great Firewall of China, as almost any firewall, is easily defeated. The GFC does only blocks for specific content, specific sites, specific searches, etc. There is plenty of software available to route your traffic safely and unnoticed through the firewall and any other. Obviously the masses won't know this, won't bother finding a way through, and that's why they don't bother to make the GFC more restrictive. But even if they did, the smart folks would always find a way through so long as there is a way (and there always will be). So don't panic just yet.

Firstly communism is already in America hence the bailout..

Don't use Chinese network if you don't want to abide by its laws, it is like a motorway network, if you don't have WOF, don't drive through it or the authority will penalize you..

So if somebody here wouldn't mind explaining what that means to a person who doesn't understand about isp's and such? I mean does that mean only people in china can get facebook, or what?

It means if you are in China and you go to their most popular search engine (Baidu) and you search for "tiananmen square massacre" the results you get back will NOT include content unfavorable to the Chinese government. Some searches may return nothing, many others would simply return searches which were heavily filtered. Search engines are required to block certain searches and certain sites. If you were to try to go directly to a site they didn't want you to access (like Facebook, which they now block) your attempt would be blocked. But again, there are many tools which can restore your access by tunneling your traffic through the firewall. Any intelligent and motivated people in China can access the full internet, without (significant) risk.

China is in a very "interesting" position in that they are trying to keep a very fractured society together, and this is one tool that they are using. It's not so simple as them simply wanting to control everything and everyone. Where they feel they must, they will. Where they feel they don't need to, they don't. For example, they do NOT force Hong Kong to use the GFC. And they permit many vocal bloggers, Twitterers, etc. to operate in China, and permit them to express dissent and use methods to get around the GFC. And they tolerate all this knowingly, to a point. But they also did recently jail a former professor and writer who was the author of a manifesto advocating various reforms to 11 years in prison.

Thank you.

I would say to you, so that means it really has no effect on me, sitting here in north ga on my computer with facebook pulled up in another window playing farmville as I read on ATS, however, I care about the rest of the world and not just my little neck of the woods. I am not so sure that the chinese, or any government, knows best for it's people at all times, and not allowing them access to simple site like facebook says a lot about how they want their people to percieve the rest of the world, socially speaking.

I can easily come up with one way: a typo between the number "1" and "2".

What kind of keyboard do you use?

I think the title is misleading, for what the article is saying, the problem was the DNS server, that would mean, if you typed www.abovetopsecret.com, your browser would go to a server in CHINA and look for the abovetopsecret real physical address, so, its not like all the information was going thought some filter in CHINA

but yeah, some websites could have been out of reach if DNS server in CHINA was blocking them in some way that I dont know a lot about
