Washington (CNN) -- Iran is helping train Taliban fighters within its borders, according to U.S. military and intelligence officials.

The United States has already said that the Taliban may be receiving limited training from the Iranians in Afghanistan, but the officials told CNN that training in the use of small arms was occurring within Iran.

"We've known for some time that Iran has been a source for both materiel and trained fighters for Taliban elements in Afghanistan," Army Lt. Col. Edward Sholtis said Monday. But, he said, it is unknown whether that training is occurring with th

This is getting to be quite predictable.

The powers that be probably do want to stitch up Iran in the long run. At the same time Iran funds and trains terrorists all round the Middle East so it's possibly true. The US does seem to be ratcheting up the Iran issue as each day passes, maybe it's getting a little nervy that Israel is about to go off the leash and needs to demonise it ASAP

The military says it so it must be true. Of course they don't want a war, wars are terrible.

Then again, say you are an officer looking for advancement, war provides a perfect opportunity. Or a bureaucrat. Or a politician looking to funnel funds to the corporations that do military related work in your state.

And of course the intelligence services benefit from any sort of chaos.

Oh yeah, don't forget the media. The only bigger news than war is natural disasters (well, maybe a nip slip).

you said it right. but the USA needs saudi arabia because without them there will be peace in the middle east and therefore the presence of the USA is not needed. saudi arabia is the cause of chaos and unrest in the region, they fund terrorists on US orders, then the US say right, lets go and sort it out... they'r all friends

I was watching a public television special on Iran last night. What a beautiful country filled with wonderful people. Like all countries and all governments there are some evil and bad ones. But I think many Iranians, especially younger generations are like Americans in a lot of ways. I think it would be a huge travesty if the US was involved in a war with Iran. Why not support regime change through diplomatic ways and supporting the opposition to the current government? If our government feels violence is the only answer and war.............they better watch their back..............because as an American sick and tired of my government........if there is a violent movement to topple my own government I will support it any way I can. The US government is completely out of control. And it/they need to be stopped.
