Invisibility cloak created in 3-D

news.bbc.co.uk.

Scientists have created the first device to render an object invisible in three dimensions.

The "cloak", described in the journal Science, hid an object from detection using light of wavelengths close to those that are visible to humans.

Previous devices have been able to hide objects from light travelling in only one direction; viewed from any other angle, the object would remain visible.

This is a very early but significant step towards true invisibility cloaks.

This is amazing news!!

How long will it be before we have true invisibility being used??

I can think of many applications for such technology more than just the obvious military applications, such as glasses that have what appears to be no rims
or maybe a wall painted in invisibility pain to create a wall wide window??

Though the obvious military ones are the ones that will of course get implemented first, I wonder at how long this technology will take to get to the consumer?

Can anyone else think of any cool ways this technology could be used other than the military?

All the best,

Korg.

Sounds like Optical Camouflage which NATICK are developing for their Future Soldier 2030 programme.

For sneaking through Hogwarts in an effort to defeat the evil Lord Voldamort... Obviously!

Seriously, this is pretty cool stuff, but I can't think of any practical use other than military at the moment, sorry.

TV shows like candid camera, you`ve been framed etc.
Could make lamposts invisible and then film people walking into them...

Amazing yes, but not new news.

I remember seeing a photograph way back in the late 90's, of President Bush (snr), on a fishing trip in the Everglades.

Nothing unusual about that in itself, apart from the fact that he was in the water (waders) about a foot deep, holding his fishing rod and apparently talking to someone beside him..only there was nobody beside him...just another fishing rod, up in the air, apparently fishing...all by itself

The establishment ALWAYS get's the good tech decades before we do.

It's most effective use is for fellows named Tom who enjoy 'watching' you unclothe.

I was about to make a thread about this...then I remembered I don't have enough posts to make a thread

Interesting - I'm pretty sure, though, that you couldn't make an invisible wall with it
I don't really like the idea myself. It's bad enough pulling up to an army checkpoint (not that we've had those for a while) and glancing out the window to see a soldier hiding in the bushes looking in at me; but being surrounded by soldiers you can't even see... Also, everything can be used for good and bad - burglaries, murders etc would be a hell of a lot easier if you were invisible.

Still, that's probably a long way in the future...

EDIT for god-awful grammer.

Good stuff. The private sector might finally have a cloaking solution.

The DoD has already developed a fully functional, multispectrum cloak that is able to give invisibility in throughout the EM field, including light. It, i believe, uses a system that absorbs, alters, and diffuses or uses the energy.

I have told this to people in many threads. Not sure if anyone is interested. But I have put information about it in another thread that i made on the invisibility cloaks from a couple years ago.

edit to add: S and F.
Surprised that i am the first to do so. This is pretty important stuff.

I agree the military have already perfected this tech, but to slowly introduce the idea to the populace would mean what do you think?

Thanks for the star and flag, i'm not sure why this news hasn't thrown up more interest. maybe because people think its another crackpot tech that will never see the light of day...pun intended

Seriously though, I think for this technology to find its way into the private sector it would need to have a killer app, something that would mean that we think 'how did we ever do without it'.

I must admit I'm struggling to think of anything other than military / criminal usage.

but I do like the candid camera idea though not a killer app it surely would make some of the best tv ever

I wonder if true invisability could be turned on and off with a flip of a switch?? if so then this would mean some really cool implications for electronics and computing.

All the best,

Korg.

bump..

Did anyone ever debunk this footage from Iraq?

See 3:00

Is it a camouflage suit or just compressed pixelation?

Cheers.

I would say that this is not invisability becasue if it was why re-apear when they got to the tank??

All the best,

Korg.

Hey Korg, thanks for the reply -whatever it is it sure does look a bit freaky.

Cheers.

You're welcome... Not sure what caused this effect though, if it’s not a hoax. I wonder if there are any video buffs out there that could help?

Also I found this news bite about the news article above..

All the best,

Korg.

Here is one excellent, peaceful application of this: cloaking cell towers. If you could cloak cell towers, but only from the perspective of the ground based viewer, you could improve the way the landscape looks.

Out here in West Texas we have so many windmmills it looks like some creepy, futuristic wasteland. I sure would like to hide them, too.

So long as there was some way to avoid people walking into them or birds flying into them... such as this...

Grisly mystery after scores of starlings fall out of the sky and lie dying

but taking your thought and extending it to a whole building, you could make say a whole factory invisible from one side. The side that faces the road or housing estate.

It surely would make planning permission easier.

We have just got a field of mills up our way and there was quite some opposition, though actually I like them, even though they won’t break even in cost for like 12 years they kind of remind me that this is 2010 not 1990

All the best,

Korg.
