Hey I know they have found plenty of planets outside our solar system, many the size of Jupiter and way beyond. I've read here many times people discussing possible life on other planets. Now it seems they have found one right near the sweet spot of where scientists generally agree a planet that may support should be.

Now what if they find a Earth replacement next?

Would you go?

Do we have a right to it?

Pure speculation of course but...
Cool: New Exoplanet Is Near Habitable Zone

Extrasolar planet hunters are excited about a not-so-hot discovery. For the first time, they’ve found a relatively cool extrasolar planet that they can study in detail.

sciencenews The finding is a milestone, says study co-author Hans Deeg of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias in Tenerife, Spain, because it is the first time astronomers have found an extrasolar planet that not only is cool enough to be similar in composition and history to the familiar solar system gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, but also passes in front of the star it orbits.

Although a number of extrasolar planets with moderate temperatures have been discovered, only a planet that passes in front of — or transits — its star can be studied in depth. The starlight that filters through the atmosphere of the planet during each passage reveals the orb’s composition, while the amount of starlight that is blocked outright indicates the planet’s size.

All the other transiting planets seen so far have been “weird — inflated and hot” because they orbit so close to their stars, notes study collaborator Didier Queloz of the Geneva Observatory in Sauverny, Switzerland. Deeg, Queloz and their colleagues report their findings in the March 18 Nature.

The planet, found with the COROT satellite and dubbed COROT-9b, lies 1,500 light-years from Earth and never gets closer to its star than Mercury’s average distance from the sun. That puts the surface temperature of the planet in a relatively temperate range, somewhere between 250 kelvins and 430 kelvins (-23˚ to 157˚ Celsius). Although the gaseous planet isn’t expected to be habitable, its atmosphere could contain water vapor.

Ah, the discovery of exotic planets as well as earth-like planets as well. I had read something up on this before, just not too many earth like planets out there

By what do you mean Do we have a right to it?

If it is referring to, we as humans have the right to colonize the planet, we are locusts, Planet Killers. On top of that, the possibility of some other civilization living there is quite high.

If you do mean, right for colonization. We don't have that right. Not until we change our ways, otherwise, we will be kept here on Earth to rot in the spilling of our own blood, bathe in man made pools of radioactive fallout, and continue to live on a dying world from factories, producing the choking black smog of death.

As far as discovering other planets, we just wont have the opportunity to colonize, pillage, and rape another world till left dying.

Onya Slayer!

I love hearing news like this, it gives hope.

Theres just one thing about moving there, we have to beat our current institutional governments there and setup quick.

I think we will have many major discoveries in the next few years. Even in the last year or so, we have seen amazing stories about other planets.

We will find other Earth like planets, but I can't see how we will ever make it to them.

The distance is mind boggling to say the least.

If we could develop some kind of wormhole technology, then it would be a goer.

you took words from my mind.
star from me

aliens would be wondering do we really like grey skies, polluted rivers etc....

3rd planet would kill half of species, pollute air, dirt and water, make few world wars just to honour our coming

When I read that story and started thinking about how we handle ourselves so far on Earth I was thinking the very same way. We need to demonstrate that we can handle things here first before we take off and nab another planet.

billions planets in our galaxy, billions of galaxies that we can see

so ... do the math

do u really think that only this planet have life ?

I never thought we were the only ones out there. This is a matter of should we and do we have a right to claim another planet when one is found? I think that we are possibly closer than people think about deep space travel. It's just an opinion but the way things are headed we should be looking for some other planet.

The universe is ours for the taking, if scum gets in the way then they can burn with the rest of the universe.

Our species has the right to survive, YOUR species. If xenos do not want to live with us or cooperate then they can burn. If we run into a bigger species out there than us, then we either cope or die. I'd rather die trying to make my species worth the time our planet or creator or whatever put into us, than die sitting here rotting away.

As for this planet: I would assume very much so there is a chance of air borne life on a gas giant in a close to liveable conditioned atmosphere. Highly probable. I hope we find more

The universe has no room for dominance or war. I am willing to bet my life that there has been civilizations out there that think just like we do, and were wiped due to the dangers they posed.

We would have a right if we treated the planet that we live on a whole lot better, but so far, its the exact opposite. Carrying our wars, our destruction, our natural ways, to other solar systems that have perfect earths, lightyears away will only bring problems.

It may seem a bit Sci-Fi but there may be Type-4 civilizations that regulate and inforce a Galactic/Universal laws for a Zero Tolerance on the "killing of planets" and civilizations that put others at risk. In order to keep peace, they keep us at bay. Think of it as a quarantine. This possibility is great.

It's cope or die. That, you are right, but if we are not welcome, it wouldn't be wise to wage war just to kick someone out of their homeworld for materials. Why? Because we are possibly being observed and the information recorded from such an incident will attract others, such as the string of UFO sightings after the atom bomb dropping.

When we talk about having rights to colonize, its a bit different from the rights we have here at our home. Human rights wouldn't be recognized in the universe because we are a weaker (Type-0), wreckless species that have no signs of change. We haven't nearly begun to show that we have these rights and deciding to fight to live instead of changing our ways is the wrong way to play it out. Don't even bother picking up a weapon because we don't have a fighting chance.

It's a bit harsh, but thats the way things are headed.

I'm happy we are finding new 'habitable' planets out there and glad we have the technology to see and discover them

As for us being able to get there is a different story. I think it is out of our reach at this point in history, but that could change very quick. A couple of breakthroughs and we could be within reach. I like the idea of bunching space/time up in front of us and shooting out behind making us travel far distances in no time, but still sci-fi for now.

As for colonization, I agree with Quantumdeath. We are too destructive of a species to be worrying about colonization of other planets. We need to focus on ourselves first. We're broken and we need to be fixed.

If we go out there with a war attitude, Things will not work. Anything (literally) could live on there and we could be but an ant to them. So all of our guns and everything would mean nothing. And just because a civilization does not have space travel or whatever advancements that we deem worthy does not mean they are not advanced.
I think we should go there with the idea of peace rather than war, just makes more sense to me.

Good find!!

Have they found Planet Iarga (about 10 light years from Earth)?:
www.galactic.no...

Or is the government suppressing this one in secret?

If there is not intelligent species in the planet i dont see the problem, yes, we have the right to take it.

And i dont really understand why people think that an space faring civilization must be peaceful, we are not and if life is common in universe, maybe we are common too, so a lot of other races will be like us, violent, warlike, etc etc

I prefer to go to space with a ray gun that with flowers, if we cant defend ourselves we cant survive.

Define.....

If we start doing that we wont be able to colonize a meteor..

"Inteligent species"..What is that...Ants? Elephants? Dogs? DOLPHINS?!??
Man? IS man inteligent or just manodestructive??

I say if we find a habital planet, go for it..any species found, try to make
some kind of comunicative attempts. If everything fails, TAKE IT...
But do it with grace, not like the religious campains on or own planet.
Let them be "them" and try symbios...GIVE AND TAKE...

Why so skeptical?
It's a credible account. Face it, the government is covering this one up.
