Missing hose adds $500K to Antarctic trip

www.news.com.au

The ship is due at Davis Station this weekend but before arriving there it off-loaded cargo at Macquarie Island.

While that was happening it was supposed to supply fuel to the sub-Antarctic station, home to about 40 expeditioners over summer.

But it wasn't until the specialist refuelling crew of about half a dozen got settled on this Southern Ocean voyage that they realised the big, long, very large hose they use to transport fuel from ship to shore was missing.

If it wasn't for the money($500K) this is comical. How does a ships Captain and Specialized crew miss this big, long, very large hose. The accounted space would be bare. There's really not much to say but

"It was a critical piece of equipment that was required but it was inadvertently left behind," she[AAD spokeswoman] said.

"The ship will go to Davis, then return to Hobart to load the missing cargo and then go back down to Macquarie Island."

Well, believe it or not this type of things happens a lot in big organizations.

Was in a military unit leaving Guam,U.S.A. Our relief unit was flying in and we were to get on the plane to leave.

The plane landed, they got off, and we sat there waiting and waiting.

Finally our C.O. got on the intercom and said that this type of plane never landed in Guam U.S.A. and they did not have a tow bar that would match up and tow the plane away from the terminal to the taxiway.

One would have to be flown in from Japan,a 8 hour flight.

We were so "mad" we told them that we were sure 300 troops tired of Guam U.S.A. could push that plane out to the taxi way.

We wasted a day there with no where to go.

It was a very long flight home.

In the real world, ***t happens.
