As the lights dim the voltage in the calculator reaches a certain threshold where all the transistors that do the processing cant decide whether the ones and zeros are a one or a zero so they kind of just bounce around and end up producing gobbly gook that gets displayed on the LCD. This happens as the voltage comes up slowly in the morning too. If the system voltage from the solar cell is at the exact voltage between a one and a zero for any length of time the transistors in the processor may produce either a one or zero when they switch. This is very common with anything solar powered and anything with low batteries.
Either that or you calculator has a personality.
