My ordeal at being mistaken for Jon Venables: Terror of young father accused of being Bulger killer

A father is living in fear for his life after he was wrongly accused of being Jon Venables.

Vigilantes set up a Facebook group claiming that David Calvert, 27, was one of the killers of James Bulger.

They said he was living under the new identity with his family in a house in Fleetwood, near Blackpool.

I'd like to share this one with ATS for a few reasons, the obvious one is it's a bit of a hot topic at the moment and another is on a broader scale that relates to conspiracy theories in general.

Many times we see amateur websites or groups publishing some outlandish stories to the web, be it UFOs, NWO conspiracies and even a recent one that claimed England's Prime Minister was a paedophile. Many of these in turn are posted and discussed on ATS. Some are obviously based on the truth or an element of it - some are complete fabrications - this is more of a reminder to my fellow posters that we have to be very careful when considering these claims as the effects can be devastating and we might not realise this fully:

It all came to a head when I was in a pub and a mate said I had to leave or I would never get home alive - they said I was going to be stabbed in the toilets.

As a website with the motto of 'deny ignorance', it is our duty to do just that and avoid creating situations like the one in the news article.

Agreed. I feel sorry for this poor guy.

Only last night my dad said he had recieved a text message off someone telling him that this bloke was apparently Venables. I don't live in that area though.

But i flatly told my dad that it was rubbish and that the guy had been wrongly accused and his life had been made a hell.

man, i hope he dont get to much crap... again ..

i stay in blackpool, ALOT people round these parts can be very fast to jump to a conclusion and really dont care for facts, and i coudl imagine them making his life hell ... i really hope david carvert gets himself on tv now that venebles is in jail so people can see its not him..

so much wankers about these days who will jump at something like this as its an excuse to hurt someone.

teh local paper "blackpool gazette" has a video posted on their site today (i think sky filmed it, as it has their fingerprints on the vid.)

I feel sorry for the bloke involved. Its safe to say that the real venables will be moved to a different country after all this. To avoid the possibility of all this happening again.

I would still love to know what he done to get locked up again. Heard lots of speculation but no hard evidence yet.

The whole thing is a terrible situation.

Its interesting how no one after the life of that boy who killed reece jones. Despite him trying to hide the fact and even acting all smug in court. I wonder if there will be the same outrage when he's released.

I think the media have a lot to answer for in the Bulger case, they demonised pretty much everything (bar the parents), even getting pretty tame horror films like Child's Play 3 banned. If I remember correctly some papers were even calling for the boys to be hanged, that's pretty insane.

The media are pretty much responsible for all the hue and cry we see today in all sorts of stories. I've long since argued, got angry and even laughed at it the cycle of nonsense that this creates. The media are instigators of the fear-mongering that creates paedophiles and rapists out of all male adults (and it's getting that way with male children now). There's kiddy fiddlers everywhere apparently; everywhere apart from the British 'family' as beloved by much right wing media where, incidentally, most murders, rapes and paedophilia actually takes place.

And yet at the same, the same media demands that we must take every possible caution to prevent these crimes because even one life or one child's innocence is too many, is the same media that cries out at the interfering Nanny state that controls our lives with databases and registers and general intrusions into our privacy.

Is it any wonder society is buggered? The general public - or rather the unthinking, uncritical masses - are whipped-up into a frenzy, a hateful mob ready to burn anyone on the slightest bit of evidence and then the next minute be outraged and disgusted because their privacy is infringed upon.

I really, really hope the people that are involved in this campaign against this bloke are actually prosecuted for it.
