This thread is a direct response to the other thread in Breaking Alternate News of same name Atheists offer porn for bibles.

That thread was started with some news coverage but no significant details about the group involved, and it was clear that some people didn't bother to even read the news source before commenting. There was a lot of misunderstanding.

The News Report had this to say.

Emotions ran high last week when an atheist group asked UTSA students to trade in their Bibles for pornographic magazines.

On Monday afternoon, the group set up a table on campus for their "Smut for Smut" trade offer. The group featured a sign at their table that read, "Trade in Holy Text 4 Porn."

Nearby, some students gathered in protest by reading their Bibles and praying.

After the event, the atheist group posted on their Twitter page, "Too often are we ignored this seems to get people to actually talk to us instead of ignore us."

The atheist group tells KENS 5 that it will donate all of its Bibles to local libraries.
[kens5.com]
It wasn't a very good report, it only seemed to cover the event and not the people involved. So I'd like to take the time to present the group who organised this event, Atheist Agenda.

Q: What the hell do you think you’re doing?

A: We’ve set up a table where people can stop by and donate their religious reading material and – if they desire, and if they are old enough – receive a number of porn magazines. This can include fundamental texts like the Koran, the Bible, or Dianetics; religious apologia and self-help like Warren’s The Purpose-Driven Life and Lewis’s Mere Christianity; or those unnerving little tracts that Jack Chick makes.

We aren’t the first to come up with this. A group at UT Austin called The Knighthood of Buh did a similar thing called “Porn for Bibles” several years ago. They weren’t atheists, so they didn’t get nearly the publicity (or the backlash) we did when we broadened it to include all religions. It’s a clever reversal of the projects some religious groups have in which they collect porn and distribute bibles, and we owe the idea to the Knights.

Q: Why would you do such a thing?

A: It’s symbolic. Pornography is vilified by the religious community, but in reality the values espoused by religious doctrine are far more reprehensible. So, in effect, it’s trading something appalling for something less appalling. We also like to get people to think, to talk to us, and to debate with us. That only works when they understand just what we’re doing, hence this FAQ.

Q: Are you going to burn my book if I give it to you?

A: Destroying knowledge is one of the most disgusting acts imaginable. We keep what you give us as debate tools. Sometimes, in the case of tracts or pamphlets, they’re good for a laugh.
[Atheist Agenda]

I just wanted to make people more aware of the point because there were a lot of comments on the other thread mentioned above that showed a lack of understanding; things like the following:

Why won't these people just let us believe in God in peace? Is that so hard? Just let us believe whatever the [snip] we want to and we will do the same for you...
Firstly, christians started protesting pretty quickly, and don't think that we atheists haven't heard "The fool sayeth in his heart "there is no god"" a thousand times before. We atheists can't even defend the stance without being told we're oppressing other peoples beliefs if that weren't entirely hypocritical and false.

But, what if they tried this with the Koran..? I bet they would get beat down quickly.
The accepted the Qur'an and any other holy text.

I don't care what you do or don't believe, I would like the same courtesy. Is that too much to ask?
Bibles 4 porn is an invitation to trade, no one was forced to give up their beliefs or books.

Although the article doesn't mention it, this is more than likely a student group out for a little attention. These college kids probably will be marking this down as their idea of a joke in the long run.
Well as cited in the article featured in the news thread, this was a group of atheists making a statement.

I imagine their childish desecreation of the books they do collect, speaks volumes to how much they actually know,. about what they are doing
They were donated to libraries.

All of these were echoed many times by may drive-by posters. I even u2u'd the OP of the other thread in order to get the op updated with the important information but nothing happened. Anyway, I hope the record is now set straight for everyone.

It is funny how much traction this story is getting. And it is RARELY highlighted that the Atheists are just showing the hypocritical double standard that the Christians are adhering to.

A juvenile but humorous stunt.

I know that thread exists, but it's a bad coverage of the event, it missed all the detail (wherein the devil no doubt lies). That's the point. And besides, I've already linked that very thread in the op.

Yes, like my comments in the other thread, this is trading porn for porn. Many people fail to get this.

It’s symbolic. Pornography is vilified by the religious community, but in reality the values espoused by religious doctrine are far more reprehensible. So, in effect, it’s trading something appalling for something less appalling.

Exactly.

Most Christians have never actually read the Bible or just glossed over some verses.

Some Christians have complained about JW's visiting their homes and giving them tracts and books.

And the funny thing is?

They sometimes tried to trade their Bible or tracts for theirs!

Ho ho ho ho

I think anonymous said it best.

I don't care how smart you guys (think you) are, or just HOW MUCH you hate jesus and all that is holy. What offends me the most is how stuck up you [snip] are. You people are sick, stuck up, pretentious [snip] who turned Atheisim (simple lack of religion) into a super exclusive clique, that is only for the smart cool kids whom "no one understands"*BAWWWWWW! "Im an intelectual so i don't believe in jesus. That makes me better than you and ALL YOUR FRIENDS".
I despise all you twisted [snip], who mock peaopl who just want to live a peacefull life at home and worship some skygod that does not even exist. You FEED off eachothers hate, turning yourselves into sneering stuck up [snip] whom view the world through their nostrils.

Bummer, they were only giving out magazines? What is this the 1960s? Haven't atheists heard about DVDs?

The Bible contains plenty of sex anyway including Song of Solomon which is essentially a soft core poetic love story right in the middle of the Bible.

Well personally im kind of devided on the matter.
On one hand:
Christans should not be too pissd off about this because nobody who is really dedicated to their faith would trade their book of choice for pornography.
On the other hand:
This just promotes the stereotypical image of atheist being self centered, egotistical people who will say and do anything to offend others just because they are allowed to. Ironic that a group which prides itself on their superior logical critical thinking skills, has to resort to the level of giving away pornography to proove a point.

I would love to see if they would pay the same respect to someone who attempted to trade in The God Delusion or Origin of species for porn.
