Same here. Why couldn’t life arise in ammonia liquid or some sort of similar state?

i have to say that i really do not doubt alien life im somewhat skeptical about u.f.o.s though. at the end of the movie contact the main charachter says to a small child who asks if aliens exist she replies with some thing like "if were the only ones in the universe then thats an awful waste of space" i dont remember exactly but my point is good i think

We are alone in our universe, and unfortunately I believe we will remain alone as we know it. Anything past our lifetime is purely speculation, sadly I believe we have a better chance of dying to a stony asteroid than discovering alien life.

The only way that chance changes in my eyes is if they discover us. Then sadly I believe we have a better chance of dying to a superior alien race than a stony asteroid.

this is what life could look like on other planets.

at this size it could live anywhere.

All I can say is thumbs up to the op, I definitely learned a lot of new stuff there.

That we're not alone in this universe I think is quite commonly shared oppinion

Oh the fathomless possibilities the universe may hold it is truly beautiful

So, my point is, who says water is an essential part to all life in the universe? Us? Maybe liquid nitrogen is an essential part of life to some other race and they don't believe there could possibly be any life on our planet because we have too much water.

(not that you made this claim. But the arrogance of mainstream science bothers me sometimes)

I think the reason for searching for planets with water is because such a planet could be occupied easly. Imagine a planet with nitrogen based life, we would have to use enviroimental suits all the time.
I know this sounds sarkastic, but i think that if WE find a planet with life, then WE would be the "independence day" invasors for them....

...and if they have oil on that planet.... poor aliens, sure they have weapons of mass destruction.

if it took 4.5 billion years for humans to be on earth and some planets out there are 12 billion years old that means that it's possible that a human-like species 8 billion years more advanced than us could be out roaming the universe.

what would we be like if we survive the next 8 billion years.

it's hard to even imagine.

The extrasolar planet GJ 1214b is a rocky planet rich in water that sits about 40 light-years away. It orbits a red dwarf star. It is the only known Super-Earth exoplanet, worlds that have masses between Earth and Neptune, with a confirmed atmosphere. The planet is about three times the size of Earth and about 6.5 times as massive. Researchers think it is likely a water world with a solid center.

wow if water exists in this planet then it has a fairly good possibility to support life or if it is a water world then it may support some marine and aquatic life.

its 40 light years away though, but still life possibilities are endless in a vast universe. To OP, Reading your post was worth the time thanks

We are only aware of carbon based lifeforms, however it has been theorized that lifeforms could be built from silicon. They would be extremely slow growing, but it is possible to be a building block of life.

If a planet has water and an energy source; there is a pretty good chance at least microscopic life exists on it. It is already theorized that comets could contain microscopic life in the first place. The most current plan for discovering alien microscopic life is by mining to the core of a comet.

S&F, thanks for posting.

This blows my mind that we could soon be photographing the closest of these planets.

I believe that many of the planets that will be found habitable will be moons of gas giants large enough to be a brown dwarf and/or super earths.

Just imagine what TPTB will say when they find another habitable world?

"OK all you JPL guys; earn your pay and figure out how we can get all our oil drilling equiptment over to that there xp1287. Chop chop! We got black gold to find!

Gliese 581 d seems like the most probably chance of there being life. I did some googling and found out that they transmitted a message saying "hello from earth" along with 25,000 other messages submitted by people from all around the world. Its going to arrive in 2029, with the earliest possible response from them being in 2049. So, if there is some form of intelligent life living on Gliese 581 d, we'll be hearing from them in several years!
